No one will ever accuse Sergio Burruel of being afraid to go all in on a play. On Monday, the 25-year-old catcher for Mexico’s Naranjeros de Hermosillo nearly turned a routine foul ball into one of the finest plays of the year in Mexican pro baseball. Burruel tracked what would have been a game-ending catch all the way to the opposing teams dugout, where he dove headfirst in a spectacular display of athleticism. For several tense moments, members of both teams crowded around the dugout to check if Burruel was okay. Unfortunately, Burruel didn’t make the catch, but he received a deserved round of applause from fans. While catchers are generally more protected than your average player, it still takes some serious guts to put your body on the line like Burruel did.
