“Everything I do is for her.”
The recent death of Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández was tragic not only because a young, exuberant player lost his life during the prime of his life, but because the 24-year-old had overcome several obstacles to become a U.S. citizen, let alone a baseball superstar.
Fernández tried defecting from Cuba three times before making it to the U.S. on his fourth try — at age 15. His grandmother remained in Cuba, which meant Fernández had to grow up without seeing his abuelita. To honor the memory of Fernández, Major League Baseball recently shared a touching video that illustrates the deep bond he had with his grandmother. After Fernández describes the impact she made in his life, he gets a special surprise — a reunion with his abuelita.
