A Hollywood Actor Bought the Rights to a Movie about 'La Barbie'

A Hollywood Actor Bought the Rights to a Movie about ‘La Barbie’

Remember Edgar “La Barbie” Valdez Villareal?

That green polo shirt looks familiar, doesn’t it?

He’s the Texas-born drug gang leader who worked his way to the top of the Beltran-Leyva Cartel. He was arrested in 2010.

Last year, Valdez Villareal was extradited to the United States and was hit with several drug-related charges, including conspiring to distribute narcotics and laundering money.

Valdez Villareal, who was nicknamed “La Barbie” for his blue eyes and light complexion, once worked for Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán before becoming his bitter rival.

Valdez Villareal, who spent time as a cartel hitman, left the Sinaloa cartel for the Beltran-Leyva cartel. He eventually ended up in a power struggle for a leadership position in the Beltran-Leyva cartel after the death of kingpin Arturo Beltran-Leyva.

Think La Barbie’s story would make a great movie? Actor Armie Hammer agrees. He just bought the rights to make a movie about La Barbie.

That’s right, Sean Penn wasn’t the first Hollywood star to make a deal with a narco. Hammer told BuzzFeed News, “Owning La Barbie’s life rights was the most important thing to us. We knew that having direct access to him meant access to stories that were never intended to see the light of day.”

You probably remember Hammer from The Social Network, where he played the Winklevoss twins.

He also starred as the Lone Ranger alongside Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger.

How’d he pull off the deal with La Barbie? It all started with a little weed.

In 2012, Hammer was arrested at a border checkpoint in Texas for possession of medicinal marijuana cookies (and a brownie). Hammer ended up hiring Kent Schaffer, a top El Paso, Texas attorney who also represented, you guessed it, La Barbie. After helping Hammer get his charges dropped, Schaffer helped the actor secure a deal with La Barbie.

But Hammer isn’t the first to develop a movie about La Barbie. Legendary Pictures owns the rights to a movie about La Barbie based on a Rolling Stone article titled “An American Drug Lord in Acapulco.”

Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam has been tapped to play La Barbie in the Legendary Pictures movie.

Wondering how there can be TWO La Barbie movies? Well, Legendary Pictures can only make a film based on the Rolling Stone article. Now that Hammer owns the “life rights” of La Barbie, he can develop a biopic based on information – information that has never been made public – provided by La Barbie himself.

So, very soon, you may see a La Barbie movie starring Armie Hammer…

Or Charlie Hunnam.

There’s no word if the filmmakers plan on hiring Latin@ actors for the remaining roles in the films. ?
