In Colombia, the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, or FARC, is considered a rebel group by the government. But, it’s an organization founded on Marxist beliefs and even practices gender equality. In fact, a lot of the fighters on the battlefield are women and they are something to be reckoned with.
“The women are the worst,” said an an undercover special forces officer, “If you get captured, you pray it’s by the male rebels.”
Some of the women fighting with FARC joined to escape poverty or violence at home. And although they’re far from home, they still like Katy Perry and wearing makeup and nail polish.
The difference now is that they fight alongside men armed with grenades, pistols, and automatic rifles. And according to the undercover officer, “They’re more ideological than the men. They’re merciless.”
Their presence in FARC has allowed the men to stay put in the battlefield longer without having to miss some of the comforts of home.
These women serve as an interesting example for those who doubt women in the U.S cannot be soldiers because of their supposed limited physical strength.
