El Chapo Guzmán Captured in Sinaloa after Gun Battle with Mexican Marines

Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto is having a good start to 2016. According to his official Twitter, notorious drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán is in custody of law enforcement officials.

Earlier today, Peña Nieto published this tweet:

“Mission accomplished: We have him. I want to inform all Mexicans that Joaquín Guzmán Loera has been detained.”

He followed his announcement with praise for the country’s National Security Cabinet.

How’d they catch him? According to a statement from the Mexican Navy, they received a tip that El Chapo was in the town of Los Mochis, Sinaloa.

They conducted a early morning raid of a home and engaged in a gun battle that ended with five assailants dead and six people under arrest. Marines also found a rocket launcher, sniper rifles and a handgun at the scene.

El Chapo spent more than a decade as a fugitive after escaping from Puente Grande prison in 2001. Guzmán was eventually captured in 2014.

He became a fugitive once more after escaping from Altiplano prison last summer. The DEA eventually announced a $5,000,000 reward for his capture.
