Earlier this week, armed gunmen stormed into a restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and kidnapped a group of patrons. At first, the kidnapping seemed random, prompting the governor of Jalisco to tweet that security was being increased for the public’s safety. Well, according to Mexican officials, it looks like the kidnapping in Puerto Vallarta might be a power play by the rising Jalisco New Generation cartel against Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s Sinaloa cartel.

On early Monday morning, six men were kidnapped from La Leche, an upscale restaurant in the resort town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

At first, the abduction was seen as a senseless and terrifying kidnapping of innocent residents and tourists. Originally, there were reports that as many as 16 people were kidnapped. Now, authorities have a new, more chilling explanation.

Photos from La Leche’s closed-circuit cameras, published by El Blog Del Narco, allegedly show one of El Chapo’s sons.

El Chapo’s son, Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar, is allegedly the man circled in the photo. He’s sitting with friends and fellow cartel members.

During the meal, authorities allege that seven armed men entered the restaurant and kidnapped El Chapo’s son, according to The Guardian.

“His enemies are taking advantage of his distraction with extradition and his weakness,” Adrian Lopez, the editor of the El Noroeste newspaper in Sinaloa, told The Guardian. “After his third arrest he has been weakened even more. It seems like he employed a lot of resources in the last escape.”

This is the second time that rival cartels have targeted El Chapo’s loved ones while he sits in prison.

According to El País, just two months ago, armed men stormed El Chapo’s hometown of La Tuna, Mexico and forced all the residents to flee. The group of 150 armed men ransacked the home of El Chapo’s 86-year-old mother, Consuelo Loera del Guzman. According to The Guardian, this attack was orchestrated by the Beltran Leyva Cartel.

Authorities have identified most of those kidnapped based on images and personal items found on phones and in cars left in the parking lot. One of the photos that was recovered from one of the phones, shows the missing son of El Chapo and Kate del Castillo.

The photo is believed to have been taken in late 2015.

And, of course, some people are wondering how close she was to not only El Chapo, but his son.

Del Castillo is being investigated and could face charges of obstruction of justice and money laundering for her meeting with El Chapo last year. Earlier this month, del Castillo filed a motion to have the charges against her dropped since investigators still haven’t brought charges against her. This photo probably won’t help.
