Demi Lovato: From Awkward Teen to Queen of Shade

Demi has come a long way since her awkward Disney days.

This year, she’s been busy promoting her new album Confident.

And she’s been so badass that she received 2015 Billboard’s Rulebreaker Award.

But when she’s not singing her heart out she’s busy speaking her mind – and by that we mean throwing some real good SHADE.

Oh, yes, she did.

But don’t get her wrong, she wasn’t throwing any mean shade at Miley Cyrus.

But that wasn’t the case when she called out certain mean female pop-artists.

In an interview for Cosmo’s September’s issue, Lovato had a few words for some undisclosed singers: “There are a lot of girls in pop. They have badass lyrics, but I feel like I’m the only person other than Rihanna and Nicki Minaj who isn’t afraid to say, ‘Try something on me and I’ll fucking beat your ass.’ There are people who can dress up and play the part, but their music doesn’t say it.”

Or all those times she reminded everyone that body shaming is lame.

Despite the harsh criticism Azalea has endured this year, Lovato proudly stands by her side. “She’s very, very, very real. What you see is what you get. I think sometimes that pushes people away, but that’s what I admire about her. She’s the furthest thing from fake. In this entertainment business, that’s so hard to find with anybody,” she told Complex magazine.

We hear ya, Demi.

Here’s How The Internet Reacted When Demi Lovato Tweeted About The 21 Savage Controversy

ddlovato / Instagram

We all know Demi Lovato is just six months sober from a major overdose in July 2018. She’s spent 90 days in rehab, out of the public eye, and has been slowing returning to social media. First, it started out with Instagram likes and gradually progressed to the singer calling out body-shaming gaming app advertisements on the platform.

Now, the international icon has deleted her Twitter platform after users assumed the worst in her and started attacking her mental health struggles. Lovato took to her Instagram stories to explain exactly what went down.

It all started when rapper 21 Savage was arrested by ICE for deportation.

The whole internet was shook to learn that 21 Savage was even British to begin with. The rapper entered the US legally in 2005 but has allegedly failed to renew his visa to legally stay in the country.

“So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.”

Lovato tweeted and then quickly deleted the tweet after people starting attacking her past drug use. Before deleting her account, she parted with these words, “If you’re gonna come at me for making a joke, try coming at me for something original and not involving drugs.”

Lovato was quick to get the story straight, however.

Get it? Because who knew that 21 Savage was British and do they even have pens over there yet? Let the record show that the whole internet was already laughing at this.

And quick to call out the truly barbaric attacks she was receiving.

CREDIT: @ddlovato / Instagram

“Go shoot some more heroine Demi”? Really? It is never okay to bully someone for mental health problems.

Lovato is known for being vulnerable and honest about her battles with addiction.

CREDIT: @ddlovato / Instagram

Her fanbase is so big and devoted because of that vulnerability. Lovato has always taken us all along for the ride.

That vulnerability made her a quick target.

CREDIT: @ddlovato / Instagram

It’s hard enough to overcome an addiction in private. We can’t imagine how difficult it must be as a public figure.

People shouldn’t be directing their anger with ICE at Demi Lovato.

CREDIT: @ddlovato / Instagram

Understandably, the immigrant community and its allies have well-deserved anger and resentment towards the free range that ICE as a federal agency receives. They’re the ones separating children from their families without any intent or means to reunite them.

Because, really, there’s no excuse for this kind of dangerous behavior.

CREDIT: @ddlovato / Instagram

And yet, all that ugly that ICE brings to the table doesn’t permit ugly to be dished out at other vulnerable populations. Haven’t we been educated enough to arrive at the scientific consensus that addiction and alcoholism is a disease? Nobody is cracking lupus jokes at Selena Gomez.

Could Lovato have provided some compassionate context?

CREDIT: @ddlovato / Instagram

Completely out of the context of her personality, you could question what she was referring to. But we do know the context, and Lovato isn’t AOC. She’s perusing the Twitterverse like everyone else.

Even Wale came out to throw shade at Lovato.

CREDIT: @wale / Twitter

At first, he just replied to her saying, “Why is somebody freedom funny…I don’t get the joke.” Lovato’s now deleted response was, “Wale just salty I never replied to his desperate tweets years ago.”

Wale responded, “Still ain’t gon disrespect you…still praying for you Demi. Glad u seen my old tweets. Hopefully you seen the ones providing comfort and prayer when you were down. I don’t kick people when they down. Go queen.”

Lovato spells it out crystal clear:

Wale kept going, but, understandably, Lovato wants to keep the conversation more private. Being a celebrity sounds terrible.

Some celebrities have come out to support Demi.

CREDIT: @torylanez / Instagram

In an Instagram live stream, Tory Lanez pulled for Demi. “I’m not feeling this whole coming for Demi Lovato thing B, I’m not feeling it. I’m not feeling it. Some n***as really don’t watch the Super Bowl my n***a? And I’m not gonna lie that shit is wild entertaining n***a. I’m not for this whole coming for Demi Lovato thing.”

And now, there are even memes about the meme scandal. #TheInternet

CREDIT: @8Casey_ / Twitter

It’s crazy how that went from 0 to 100 real quick. Demi laughed alongside The Internet at a truly non-offensive meme and now she’s canceled Twitter.

Some of the memes are painfully accurate of how it went down.

CREDIT: @TLN_John97 / Twitter

I’m cringing. The internet calls out Demi for laughing at one element of an otherwise traumatic event, and the internet responds by wielding her own trauma as the butt of a joke. Cool.

Even if your racist tio tweeted that meme, you’d probably let it slide.

CREDIT: @ivse / Twitter

You have to pick your battles, right? And making fun of British quills ain’t mierda compared to everything else out there. Not even relatively speaking, is the meme offensive.

Our societal double standards around drug addiction need to change.

CREDIT: @PiecesDubz / Twitter

I’d also like to point out how sexism allows people to subconsciously respect one man’s addiction and use a woman’s addiction as a ‘flaw.’ We can do better.

Meanwhile, the internet has largely left this one alone.

CREDIT: @tomilahren / Twitter

Tomi Lahren is still on Twitter?! Excuse me?! Where the trolls at?

Except for Cardi B. She’s revving up for a dog walk.

CREDIT: @iamcardib / Instagram

If you missed the epic interchange between Cardi B and conservative pundit Tomi Lahren, let’s just say that Lahren tried it with Cardi B but Cardi B shut her down hard.

Now we’ve lost our Twitter privileges with Demi.

CREDIT: @ddlovato / Instagram

We don’t know how long she’ll be breaking from Twitter, but we hope it’s not long. Since she’s been back on social media, she’s rallied her fan base to petition Instagram to remove advertisements for a hugely problematic body shaming game.

It’s agreed that Lovato, nor anyone else, deserves to be bullied.

CREDIT: @ddlovato / Instagram

The internet is a place where bullying can run rampant. It those times, if you are exepriencing or witnessing bullying that affects you, it is important to know that you can walk away. Silence the notifications, put the phone down, and take time for yourself.

Demi Lovato Is Taking Steps To Recovery And Fans Are Showering Her With Love

@kaylareneemedd / Twitter

Demi Lovato is back home after completing 90 days of in-patient treatment for her sobriety. Lovato has been open about her addiction and recovery for years now, and has helped humanize and destigmatize the disease. We know that she’s attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and very, very slowly stepping back into her life.

Lovatics are screaming for her return, so here are the breadcrumbs of what we know about her sobriety, where she’s been spotted around Los Angeles, and who she’s stanning on the gram.

The disease of addiction almost killed her in July.

Her assistant found her unconscious body with blood on her pillow and immediately thought she was dead. She was hospitalized for almost two weeks before she was released for her overdose.

This is the last photo she posted before overdosing.

That same night, we know that she overdosed and was taken to the hospital via ambulance. The 26-year-old eventually posted another photo thanking her fans and discussing her recovery but has since deleted it.

Last week, Demi posted for the first time in over three months urging her fans to get to the polls.

Lovato is starting fresh with a new phone number.

Needless to say, 70.5 million followers saw this and immediately DM’ed her. Clearly, she’s drawing personal boundaries from scratch and her fans are here for it.

Case in point:

TMZ has reported that Lovato is splitting her time between home and a sober house, which is quite common for strong addiction recovery facilities. There is no cure for addiction, but strong, clear accountability by professionals with strong support systems by other recovering alcoholics has been proven effective.

Lovato liked Christina Aguilera’s post promoting her Liberation tour.

Then, the Lovatics swarmed in on @xtina’s post. Literally the whole comment feed is full of folks celebrating Lovato’s return to social media.

The internet is thirsty for Lovato content.

It’s easy to be a fan and move on with your life without realizing that Lovato has been going through some serious physical and mental health recovery all along. She may be making a soft re-entry into social media, but she is still very vulnerable.

TMZ has reported that her ex, Valderrama has been a major support for her.

An insider told Us Weekly that, “Demi and Wilmer are still in constant communication,” and that they “speak over the phone pretty much every day and see each other often.” They haven’t been seen publicly yet.

Back in 2015, Lovato said that she “really wouldn’t be alive today without him,” according to the LA Times.

She captioned a photo celebrating her third year of sobriety saying, “He’s loved me the way I never thought I deserved to be loved and with this day marking my 3rd year sober… After sharing my ups, putting up with my downs and supporting my recovery… he still never takes credit and I want the world to know how incredible his soul is.”

That said, she was spotted at a Japanese restaurant in Beverly Hills with designer Henry Levy.

A source told People that “Henry has been helping Demi stay on the right path.” You do you, boo.

She’s also been spotted hitting the gym and stopping by an office building.

A different People source added, “He has a bit of a troubled past as well, but is doing well now. He will be great at supporting Demi’s sobriety. He is kind of an eccentric guy, but sweet. Demi won’t be bored with him. He is very creative and passionate about life.”

These are the freshest photos of Demi in months and Lovatics are panicking.

Prepare yourself because what you are about to hear is going to make you very, VERY angry. You’ve been warned.

Some people have already started body shaming the recovering singer.

CREDIT: @JCMD_Media / Twitter

We’re not going to honor the trolls or the basura they spew by quoting anything here, but we will say that her fan base does not disappoint. Ejemplo: “Demi, the #lovatics love you. You look amazing. Please do not listen to these ignorant, mostly male, haters. God bless you.”

You’ve never looked better, mija.

This is what health looks like. I’ve never stanned harder.

While we don’t have as much Lovato content, at least we have each other. ❤️

CREDIT: @nadiahanii / Twitter

“We got dragged together by Demi” 😂 It’s true. Her fearlessness, honesty and vulnerability in everything she does is the most compelling thing on the internet. During these dark times, we need Demi now more than ever.

Even though she’s been off social media for months, fans are blowing internet kisses.

CREDIT: @kaylareneemedd / Twitter

We hope the only content she’s consuming is this.

So Demi, if you’re reading, here’s all the mushy content you need.

CREDIT: @aye_omega / Twitter

Raise your hand if you’re one of the Lovatics that are proud of her for prioritizing her health. When Lovato shows up for herself, she shows us all how to do the same.

Your health is all we’re looking at.

CREDIT: @kaylareneemedd / Twitter

It’s hard because we miss you so much, but also know that all this attention is probably not what you need right now. We’re shipping you all the positive energy to keep that healthy glow going.

Some of us are getting tatted to show her support.

CREDIT: @mymindlovato / Twitter

Lovato’s last post had said, “I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side. I will keep fighting.”

Stay strong, Demi.

Demi, we see you, we’re here for you, y te amos.

CREDIT: @ddlovato / Instagram

Haters? What haters? All we see is love y respecto for this process you’re going through. When you’re ready for the onslaught of love, you know where to go.
