It’s not even close to Halloween, but a peculiar costume on Amazon.com caught the eye of Jeronimo Saldaña — creator of the popular “Make America Mexico Again” — which prompted him to create a petition to get the online retail giant to have it removed. The costume, a white, full-body jumpsuit designed to make someone look like a walking brick wall, has the phrase “Mexico Will Pay!” emblazoned on it.
According to Amazon.com, the costume was first available on the site last summer and there are several reviews from people who bought the costume for Halloween. Reviewer G. loved it:
“Only people with no imagination/sense of humor were offended. Everyone else loved it. Even the democrats. Probably because it accents my package.”
Another reviewer, Kindle Customer, was not feeling it at all:
“And people wonder why there is so much hate or racism in this country. To some this is a funny costume, I hope you have enough time to explain yourselves when you get approached by a Hispanic group questioning your motives when wearing this. Its all fun and games till someone gets hurt.”
Saldaña’s petition, which he tweeted out earlier this week, calls for Amazon.com to remove the costume.
“Donald Trump’s rise to power has been forged on a hate filled agenda that began with him referring to Mexican immigrants as rapists, killers and thieves. During his campaign, he perpetuated anti-Latinx sentiment by promising to build a “big beautiful wall” to “keep Americans safe”. Trump’s promise of a border wall soon grew into an anti-immigrant chant that has been used to taunt Latinx children in classrooms, playgrounds, and school sporting events.
The “costume” advertised on Amazon’s website promotes this despicable xenophobia and is nothing more than a modernized version of a Ku Klux Klan robe. We demand Amazon immediately remove it and all other racist merchandise from its site.”
As the petition mentions, there are similar items for sale on Amazon, like these T-shirts:
Of course, we live in a capitalist society, so there are T-shirts available for those on the other side of this issue:
Would it be a total surprise if all those shirts were being sold by the same company?
