This Clip Of Gamora Speaking Spanish On The Set Of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Would Have Made For A Better Twist

“Avengers: Endgame” actress and Latina powerhouse Zoe Saldana posted a video on her Instagram page of herself decked-out in full costume for her MCU character, Gamora. In the video, Saldana sips on an unknown beverage before launching into a little ditty: “Aquí con mi matecito, en el set de Avengers.” She then stops and looks at the camera with feigned surprise and says, “Gamora speaks Spanish? No lo sabía”.

She captioned the video: “What! Espanol…GAMORA?!?”

The video quickly garnered a lot of attention, racking up almost 6 million views and over 33,000 comments. The comment section filled up with Latino fans expressing their joy at seeing one of their favorite Marvel characters speaking their language. Even fellow “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor, Vin Diesel, took to the comments to express his approval, commenting “No lo sabia!?! Hahaha. Love”.

It’s not often that the Latinx community sees a celebrity in one of the most massive and successful franchises in history repping their Latinx identity with such pride.

It’s also noteworthy that Saldana was mentioned that she was drinking matecito or mate in her Insta post, a caffeine-rich drink that is popular in South America, especially in Argentina. So, in general, Saldana is giving off all the Latinx vibes in this social media post.

Saldana has been candid before about how she gravitates towards sci-fi roles because they put less emphasis on the color of her skin–which she believes is secondary to who she is as a person.

“If I only went after Latina roles or roles of women of color then I’m not really exercising my desire to be an artist full-heartedly and whole-heartedly,” she told A Plus online. “The purpose of being an actor is to be a chameleon where you get to play different things. When the roles provided for me on Earth are limited, then space felt like the right place to go.”

As for Latinx Twitter, they couldn’t get enough of Gamora speaking Spanish.

Like we said, the rarity of an occasion like this is cause for celebration.

This super-fan felt the need to shout the news from the rooftops.

We can’t blame him for showing his excitement.

This Latina felt the effect of Saldana’s charisma in full-swing.

So many Latinas were discussing with their girlfriends how Saldana has made them have a girl crush that they didn’t even know they were capable of.

This girl was super excited that her favorite drink was finally getting the attention it deserved.

In South America, the cult of mate is real.

And this Latina gave Saldana a nickname that we’ll be using from this point forward:

Facts.

We’re so happy that Zoe Saldana, as Latina in Hollywood, has experienced so much success in both her “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Avengers” franchises! We can’t wait to see what’s next for her–we know she’ll slay no matter what.

Shia LeBeouf is in the new movie “The Tax Collector” and people are accusing him of brownface for this role. The actor takes on the accent for the role and got a chest tattoo to do the role authentically. For some, it is cultural appropriation and it has started a debate.

Shia LeBeouf is the man in “The Tax Collector” and people have questions.

The pulse-pounding trailer has all of the action you can handle so you can only imagine what the full movie is like. The movie is all about the tax collector having to fight to protect his family when a rival takes over his turf. LeBeouf is ready to do whatever it takes to save his family.

Some people are very upset about the role for LeBeouf.

The tattoos and the accent are too much for people. Some have argued that the role was not at all a way of cultural appropriation. Instead, LeBeouf is playing a white role that happens to have grown up in a neighborhood where he picked up the accent and a certain way of dress.

The argument is going both ways with people fighting to defend him.

While the role could be really problematic for some, others see themselves reflected in it. There are many people defending LeBeouf because they too grow up in a neighborhood and took on the culture of the neighborhood.

The director of the film, David Ayer, spoke out saying that LeBeouf is not in brownface.

“He’s a white guy playing a white guy. He’s not taking anyone’s work away,” Ayer told the LA Times to calm the critics.

Zoe Saldana Apologizes For Portraying Nina Simone In 2016 Biopic

Most of our favorites have a biopic highlighting their lives in ways we didn’t know them. In 2016, Nina Simone’s biopic was released with Zoe Saldana portraying her. There was a backlash then but Saldana did the movie anyway. Now, she’s sorry she did.

Zoe Saldana is showing remorse for portraying Nina Simone in a biopic years ago.

“I should have never played Nina,” Saldana says in a live video that has been shared on social media. “I should have done everything in my power with the leverage that I had 10 years ago, which was a different leverage, but it was leverage nonetheless. I should have done everything in my power to cast a black woman to play an exceptionally perfect black woman.”

Saldana continued with her apology by asking someone else to tell Simone’s story.

“She’s one of our giants and someone else should step up,” Saldana says. “Somebody else should tell her story.”

Saldana continues saying that Simone’s story has yet to be told on a large scale and it is a shame that more people have not heard her story, likely because of the biopic drama.

People are questioning Saldana’s motives for apologizing.

Simone’s family pushed back asking Saldana not to take the role in the past. They called her out for taking Simone’s legacy and taking the portrayal for someone who would have been better suited to tell the story.

Specifically, people are calling Saldana out for the colorism that played into her portrayal.

In the apology, Saldana does not mention the colorism that played a role in the backlash. Simone was a dark-skinned woman whose skin was important in her civil rights activism and identity. Saldana also had to wear a prosthetic on her nose to have the same nose as the singer.

While critics feel the same sentiment about Saldana as Simone, they want more from her apology.

Colorism is a very important conversation in the Black community. Saldana’s portrayal of Simone was a keystone moment in that discussion of colorism in the Black community. Many are still angered at Saldana’s portrayal of Simone because of the use of blackface and prosthetic to off-set Saldana’s European looks.
