Use These Tricks to Keep Your Curls Cute and Healthy During the Winter’s Coldest Weather

Having curly hair comes with an extra responsibility that must be taken seriously. If you’ve got a head full of curls, you can’t just jump out of the shower, put your hair in a chongo and go about your day. No, your luscious locks need extra care to be their absolute best. Moisturizing, braiding, brushing, styling, combing and so on. Whether you keep it curly or flat-ironed it straight, your pelo already needs a lot of regular TLC. That’s just during mild weather; don’t get us started on the extra lengths you have to go to in order to care for it when it gets extra cold.

Let’s just say three words: dull, dry and brittle. Sadly, this is what your curls could be reduced to thanks to the blistering chill of the winter months.

However, it doesn’t have to be that way. We’ve complied a list of the best ways to keep your curls cute and healthy during the chilliest times of the year. So, check this list out and wear those beautiful curls with pride, mija.

1. Conditioning can be cleansing.

If you haven’t ditched your shampoo for co-washing yet, you might want to give it a shot. Most shampoos have harmful sulfates in them and hair that is very wavy, curly or textured can be damaged by this. Instead, try a good co-wash conditioner and use that to replace your shampoo. It will cleanse while providing lots of moisturizer and re-hydration while removing excess oil, dirt and product build up.

2. Hair masks = weekly TLC

Hair masks are super hydrating conditioning treatments that can be used once a week. These formulas can revitalize your curls and repair any damage done between your treatments. You’ll love how super silky your hair will feel after you wash one of these masks away. There are tons of different formulas with distinct ingredients that all offer varying benefits. Try a few and find your fav!

3. Your hair needs protein, too.

Just like our bodies, protein makes our hair strong. So, naturally, our curls could use a little protein boast every once in a while. Try doing a protein treatment at the beginning of winter (every 4 to 6 weeks following that) and you will see an improvement on breakage. Use a deep conditioner afterwards and you’ll be good to go.

4. A good de-tangling spray will save your life.

Windy conditions and harsh temperatures are no fun for your curls but that’s no reason for you to punish them. Make upkeep easy by finding a de-tangling spray that will tame tangles and part knots in seconds. Add it into your am and pm routines and you’ll notice a substantial difference and your scalp will appreciate the act of kindness.

5. Try out hair oils for your curls.

For curl health, hydration is the name of the game. During these cold, dry months, you want to keep you scalp moisturized but you definitely don’t want to over do it and drown your curls. There are various kinds of hair oils and their ingredients offer everything from stress relief to a dandruff-free head of hair. Try a few but be sure to find a light formula that won’t weigh you down.

6. Give a diffuser a chance.

There’s a misconception that heat harms hair but that isn’t completely true. In fact, for your curls, a healthy blast of heat is just what they need during these winter months. Whether you have a diffuser or a hooded dryer, feel free to use it daily to revitalize your curls and give them a lively bounce.

7. A leave-in conditioner is mandatory.

We know that dryness and breakage is a big issue during the winter so most of the tricks you’ll look to will attempt to add hydration to your hair. A leave-in conditioner is guaranteed to do that. However, it will also add volume to your ‘do and will work through your daily knots and tangles. It will also drastically reduce that breakage issue. Your curls are practically begging for this product.

8. Lay your head down on luxury before you go mimis.

The best way to care for your curly hair is to have a great night’s sleep. If you’re up all night tossing and turning, you’ll be up in the morning with a head full of tangles. Instead, invest in feather pillows that are soft and always feel like they’re on the cool side. Top them off with a set of especially smooth silk pillow cases. You’ll wake up feeling like a Disney Princess.

“I’m just trying to stay positive [and] I want to make other people feel positive,” 20-year-old Adam Ray Okay told Paper. “So I’m just trying to put as much content on there as possible, on the internet. Just because right now both the internet and the actual real world are in a really dark place. So yeah, I’m just trying to stay positive.

On what inspired them to create Rosa, Okay explained she was easy to come up with because everyone can relate to her.

In late March, Okay was featured in a magazine spread published by Paper Magazine. Just weeks before, Okay made her debut on Fenty Beauty.

“I had downloaded the TikTok app and I was just scrolling, doing my thing. I wasn’t really thinking of making my own content. And then I just got inspired by myself, my childhood growing up and, like you said, everybody knows this Rosa character and I felt that she had been forgotten about… So once I brought her back, everybody was just so familiar with her and that’s why I felt she did really well,” Okay told Paper in the interview with Paper magazine. “She’s everywhere. So, even if you didn’t grow up with somebody like her, you know how she is. She’s predictable in an unpredictable way. She’s just so familiar… she is part of everybody.”

Cardi B Waxed Her Bikini Line With Veet And Shared It On Instagram

It’s tough times everywhere. And by everywhere I mean everywhere.

On top of everything, the current pandemic has kept so many of us away from our regular beauty treatments which has meant that for months so many of us have had to do without the very personal waxes and hair removal prosses that we all invest in so religiously. Cardi B knows this truth and opted to embark into the world of DIY hair removal. And fortunately for us, she documented the whole process.

Recently the rapper shared a clip of herself doing a WFH AKA a wax from home and things got wild.

“Guys, wish me fuckin’ luck,” Cardi asked users in the post as she showed off a bottle of Veet 3 in 1 Gel Cream. “I hope I don’t burn my pussy off.”

Anyone whose done a wax from home knows that the experience is never very pretty and for Cardi, it wasn’t much different. The rapper documented the process for her Instagram stories and revealed that she didn’t get very far in the process.

To follow up, she tried Veet, a hair removal cream that is supposed to painlessly dissolve the hair shaft, as opposed to yanking it out.

And it looks like things got along pretty smoothly. Cardi B called the experience “a positive thing” that she discovered thanks to quarantine. In fact, she went as far as to describe the process as “a positive thing” she discovered in quarantine.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with growing out your hair and letting it be free, no matter where your sprouts are located. BUT if you’re like me, you might not feel quite so comfortable and are likely desperately wishing you hadn’t taken your easy access to wax salons for granted. So, how to deal?

We scoured Instagram and Youtube for the best at-home wax kits and tips for Brazilians. Check them out below!

Get a good exfoliator.

GLOSSIER.COM

According to P&G’s site Reward me, exfoliating helps soften body hair and opens up hair follicles. Doing this before a wax will make the process easier and less painful.

Plan for the pain.

People don’t cringe at the sight of Steve Carrel getting a wax in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” for nothing. Waxing HURTS. But the process can be made a bit more pleasant if you take a painkiller like Alieve half an hour before waxing and if you apply a numbing cream to the area you want to wax. And don’t be silly by trying to wax during or a few days before your period!

Don’t let yourself sweat.

TWITTER.COM

Make sure you keep the area dry and clean during removal. Do so by avoiding creams and moisturizers and instead apply baby powder. The powder will make the removal process all the easier once your done and have strings of wax left over.

Sweetly Bare Sugaring Hair Removal Kit

ETSY.COM

One of the top reviewed sugaring kits on Etsy.

“At home sugaring success! I would have never done this at home if it wasn’t for COVID. Now, I don’t think I’ll ever need to pay a salon again! This is a quality product!” – Etsy review.

BrownSugarShop Body Sugaring Paste

This news my first time sugaring ever (I’ve brevet waxes either) all things considered I think it went well. I definitely think next time I’m going to leave the sugar I’m not using in the fridge to help it stay stiffer longer when I use a new piece.” – Etsy reviewer.

And there you have it. Now, let’s not fool ourselves, waxing on your own will likely be way less pleasant and much more difficult than it is at a salon, but it is possible! Hang in there, Sis.
