Yalitza Aparicio’s Appearance Alongside Hollywood Veterans In Rodarte’s Spring 2020 Lookbook Proves She’s Still Rising

Back in February of this year, “Roma” actress Yalitza Aparicio dominated fashion headlines after her appearance on the red carpet of the Oscars. The actress made her first appearance at the 91st Academy Awards as a Best Actress nominee for her breakout role as Cleo a maid of Mixteco heritage working for a family in Mexico City during the early 1970s. Aparicio had already had a big night, not only had she nailed a coveted nominee slot, she’d done so for her first role ever in a movie. And while awe over her talent was much talked about, it was the mint-green and silver metallic tulle gown she wore by Rodarte that caught so much attention.

The fashion brand has long been an established designer on red carpets but there’s no denying the actress has helped raise interest in its designers. The red carpet match of the designers and the actress proved not only to be a success at the Oscars, but it also proved worthy of a lasting partnership.

For the fashion brand’s latest lookbook, Aparicio was selected as a model.

The rising star wowed in the brand’s dreamy fashion shoot.

Aparicio appeared in the Spring lookbook in a polka-dot belted black and white dress and a pair of sheer gloves studded with pearls which also speckle her hair. She modeled the dress in a magazine that featured Hollywood veterans such as Gabrielle Union and Kirsten Dunst.

Aparicio appeared in simple colors and extravagant gowns.

For her other appearance, the actress could be seen wearing a black and white plaid dress that featured a ruffle color and puff sleeves.

Of course, it didn’t take long for reactions to Aparcio’s appearance to set fire online.

Fans of the actress were quick to call her a “reina” and other celebrities including “Mad Men” actor January Jones, who also appeared in the shoot, commented “Love. ❤️”

Aparicio’s feature is another reminder, that the indigenous actress has her heels dug into Hollywood and the fashion industry and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Back in January of this year, Vogue México honored the actress with a feature and photoshoot that served as an ode to her culture and home state of Oaxaca. Not only was she featured on the magazine’s cover, but she was also thrown a party at the Patio del Huaje en el Jardín Etnobotanico in Oaxaca.

While the finicky nature of Hollywood and its attention to actresses of color has a strong pattern, Yalitza’s star does not seem to be dwindling. In fact, her appearance in the lookbook nearly seven months after her appearance at the Oscars, and without any announcements of new roles, proves she must have a lot coming up for herself.

This Woman’s Disability Was Holding Her Back From Posting ‘Sexy’ Photos Until The Internet Gave Her A Big Collective Hug

More often than not, when posting something on social media, we assume that people’s reactions will be mostly negative. We hit ‘publish’ and brace ourselves for the negative outbursts. That’s what Nila Morton did when she posted a photo of herself, all done up and ready to party. She was worried about posting pictures that were a little more ‘sexy’ than her usual photo because she felt she didn’t embody the standard of beauty. But instead, the internet came through with messages of love and support.

Nila Morton of Greenville, South Carolina was born with a rare muscular condition called Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy.

Nila’s condition causes impairments in muscle growth and strength, and leads to severe muscular weakness and exhaustion. She was worried about posting pictures that made her feel good about herself, or that were ‘too sexy’, because she felt she didn’t embody the standard image of beauty.

Morton uses a wheelchair but does what she can to express herself with her appearance.

This includes styling her hair, doing her makeup, and dressing well. She likes to dress up when she goes out for an event, but she always shied away from sharing any of the “sexy” photos taken of her, because she feared the criticism of living with a disability.

Finally this past weekend, Morton decided to post two photos of herself, wearing a cute, little black dress.

“I usually don’t post pictures of myself when I have a nice dress on or when I go out…because I get nervous about comments since I’m not society’s view of disability,” Nila Morton told BuzzFeed News. “I decided that I should just post it because I felt beautiful and sexy.”

Over the weekend, after getting dressed up and going out, Morton decided to post the photos.

It was in the early hours of Sunday morning and she figured she could just go to bed right after, “just in case it backfired,” she said, laughing.

But to her surprise, the reaction was entirely different to what she’d expected

By the time she woke up, her tweet was already going viral. It’s currently been retweeted over 36,000 times and liked over half a million times. Mostly, Morton has been reading floods of extremely supportive comments from people on Twitter.

As a result, Morton realized:

“Getting that much positive feedback made me smile and anxious at the same time. I know that some people had negative things to say, but I saw how people had my back, which made me realize that I should never be nervous to show off myself.”

In the comments, Twitter users had Morton’s back.

Many users expressed how beautiful she was and hoped she would continue to share. “Out of your comfort zone should be your New Zone,” someone wrote. And the positive comments keep on coming!

Seeing so many positive comments on one young woman’s vulnerable post is such a heartwarming experience.

The tweets included memes professing users’ STAN status. People hyped her up, thanked her for sharing and for being a role model. All in all, this post taught Nila, and many others, that sometimes, the internet actually has our back.

Nila’s rare form of muscular dystrophy causes the muscles in her legs to deteriorate, and she can only travel short distances without needing her wheelchair.

It made her the target of cruel classmates who told Nila ‘no-one would love her’, but the brave woman refused to let their comments thwart her dreams of becoming a beauty queen – and she’s already won two titles after competing alongside able-bodied contestants.

Morton has competed against able-bodied contestants in beauty pageants and has won several titles!

As a tenacious teen, she managed to turn the criticism into something positive by pursuing her childhood dream of becoming a model —after noticing a lack of models with disabilities. Since then she’s competed against able-bodied competitors in pageants and been named Miss Mauldin Teen USA and Miss Congeniality at Miss South Carolina Teen USA 2017.

‘I’m a girl who has been bullied for having a disability and being different,’ said Nila in a 2017 interview with The Daily Mail.

A Fan Asked Eva Mendes Why She Hasn’t Acted In Years And She Says It’s Because She Isn’t Settling For Any Role

This year’s Golden Globes awards were a complete letdown for a variety of reasons. Aside from the typical #SoWhite nonsense and long speeches, people were astonished at the lack of Latinas on the red carpet. We counted four: Jennifer Lopez, Ana de Armas, Sofia Vergara, and Salma Hayek. Depressing right? We know there are more Latinas in Hollywood, but where are they? At least one of the most recognized Latina actresses is explaining why she hasn’t acted in years.

A fan recently asked Eva Mendes on Instagram when she’ll be in a new movie. Mendes responded by saying she won’t settle for any project partly because of her daughters.

On Jan. 7, Mendes responded to a fan on Instagram when she asked her,  “When the fans going to see u in some new movies?” Mendes told her kindly that she isn’t offered roles that are good enough for her.

“Hi! When there’s something worthwhile to be a part of,” she wrote on Instagram. “As a mother now, there are many roles I won’t do. There are many subject matters that I don’t want to be involved with, so it limits my choices, and I’m fine with that. I have to set an example for my girls now. But no worry, I got some side hustles. Ha! Thanks for asking. All the best for 2020.”

Mendes’s most recent role was the 2014 film Lost River directed and written by her baby daddy, Ryan Gosling. Things certainly changed for Mendes when she met Gosling in 2011.

The two first met while filming the 2012 movie, “The Place Beyond the Pines.” There was no denying the chemistry between the two in “The Place Beyond the Pines.” It was an extraordinary film about a Luke (Gosling) who doubles as a bank robber and motorcyclist. He meets Romina (Mendes), the two fall in love, and have a baby. Domestic life isn’t for Luke, and he cannot escape his crime-ridden life. We won’t give any spoilers, but it truly felt like we were witnessing a real-life love story.

Mendes is now the mother of two girls and has gone on to launch her fashion collection with New York & Company and has been busy with that for several years now.

While Mendes continues to lead a pretty private life with Gosling and her daughters, her fashion collection has been successful. She has also said that her partner has been very encouraging and proud of her work as a designer.

“Ryan is incredibly supportive, and he’s always in awe,” Mendes told People magazine last year. “He makes me realize that [making the collection] is actually a lot of work. I have so much fun doing it that I don’t really realize.”

She also added that her in-laws and her family are extremely helpful to her as she develops each collection.

“Ryan’s mom, Ryan’s sister, my mom, my sisters, my grandma are all my fashion guinea pigs,” Mendes told the magazine. “Nobody is going to be more honest than family, and our family is very honest. It’s something I really appreciate because when designing something, you need real feedback.”

Yet, still, with her success as a fashion designer, we cannot help miss Mendes as an actor. Remember her in “Training Day”?

Her role as Sara opposite Denzel Washington was so intense and incredibly raw. We can see why she would hesitate to be in certain kinds of characters, especially if the part calls for nudity or vulgar language. The role of Sara is also one that we have seen often, which is the stereotypical Latina as a single mother, living in the projects. That has been played out. That movie, however, was how we first learned of Mendes.

She stretched her comedy chops in “The Other Guys” in 2010 alongside Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell.

That movie was hilarious, and she was amusing as the wife of Will Ferrell. Then again, that role was of a sexy (but smart) Latina who could whip of a home-cooked meal and be stunning all at the same time. Mendes can play the ultimate woman because she is a lot of ways. However, we understand she wants to break away from that notion that all Latinas are curvy, sexy, and feisty.

Her Instagram is always active, so it makes us feel like Mendes hasn’t gone anywhere.

But we still miss you on the big screen, Eva. Come back!!
