The ‘Euphoria’ MUA Vomits Glitter All Over The Cast. Here’s A Look At The Most Sparkly Looks This Season
At this point, you’re probably well aware that HBO’s teen drama show “Euphoria” has taken the world by storm. The show centers around a young girl named Rue (played by Zendaya) who, along with her fellow teens, struggles to find her place in the world. The show has made headlines for dealing with Gen-Z’s blunt reality of sex, drugs, and identity crises that have been heavily shaped by the internet.
But it has also made a mark due to its gorgeous makeup looks. According to “Euphoria’s” head makeup artist, Doniella Davy, showrunner Sam Levinson wanted the makeup looks to be so compelling that it prompted viewers to pause the show and strive to re-create the looks.
We’ve compiled a list of 21 of the most stunning and memorable makeup looks from “Euphoria”‘s first season.
1. “Dirty”-Era Xtina
According to Doniella Davy, “Euphoria”‘s makeup artisit-in-chief, the thesis statement behind Jules’s look is: “Express yourself through makeup, however you want, at all times, despite what the mainstream says, and what conventional gender roles have been.”
2. 70’s Disco
This is a quintessential “Maddy look”: crazy cat eye, rhinestones, and topped off with false lashes.
Those who watch “Euphoria” know that virginal Kat goes through some major changes throughout the season. And with it, so does her style. “It’s a rebellious version of glam,” says Davy.
4. “True Romance”
According to makeup artist Doniella Davy, this look was inspired by Alabama Worley from “True Romance.” The look was a chance for Sydney’s eyes to “get a turn to sparkle”.
5. Chain Eyeliner
According to Davy, this look was inspired by when she was shopping around in the jewelry-making section of arts and crafts store, Michael’s. Apparently, she “knew immediately” that she wanted to use chain eyeliner of Maddy in the future and “preferably during a moment of conflict”.
6. Non-Conforming Beauty
“I wanted Jules’ looks to challenge beauty & makeup norms, and I wanted to avoid having her look too polished, perfect or feminine. I felt that not using mascara would help achieve that for this look.”
7. Peacock Fantasy
Davy created this makeup look to be “the opposite of Cassie’s present reality in this moment”. She strove for the makeup to be “total fantasy” and was inspired by peacocks.
8. Tears of Glitter
Rue’s makeup is relatively tame throughout “Euphoria”, as she’s so caught-up in her addiction that it doesn’t seem like she can bother with a complicated beauty routine. But this look serves us just the right amount of glitter and drama for Zendaya’s flawless features.
9. Complex Cat-Eye
According to Davy, she would research complex cat-eye makeup designs on Twitter and then “run them through [her] own filter” so she was creating something “new and different”.
10. Modern Juliette
This look from episode 6 was inspired by Claire Danes in 1999’s “Romeo + Juliette”. “I wanted to evoke something ethereal + romantic + gothic,” said Davy on her Instagram page. “Also, I was looking for an opportunity to do glitter brows on someone!”.
11. Smokey Cat-Eye
Because of Gia’s (Storm Reid)’s youth, she doesn’t get to serve up a ton of makeup looks. But, this one is definiftely for the book: a thick, smokey cat-eye with jeweled braids.
12. Green Goddess
One of the things we love so much about the actress Barbie Ferreira is that she’s unashamed to rock her look in its most natural form. For example, most actresses would balk at the chance to show off their un-tweezed brows in all their unified glory.
13. Night Sk-Eye
This look is sexy, unique and mysterious–just like Jules.
14. Iris from “Taxi Driver”
For this look, Davy wanted “flame eyeliner, pink glitter and Twiggy lower lashes – all at once” to evoke the character of Iris from the classic film “Taxi Driver”
15. Ms. 45
According to Davy, this makeup look was inspired by the art-house exploitation film “Ms. 45”.
16. Understated Princess
The blue eyeliner and ribbon make for a goody-two-shoes look with a bit of an edge.
17. Courtney Love-Inspired
This smudgy grungey Nirvana-era makeup look is one of the more understated looks of “Euphoria”, but it packs a punch nonetheless.
This look has David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust written all over it.
Even when Maddy is at her most stripped-down, she still commands attention. Here, she pares a low-key look with matte green shadow.
20. Neon Goth
Show runner Sam Levinson asked for “neon X’s on Anna’s eyelids and a goth vibe” for this look.
21. Purple Romantic
“Euphoria’s” makeup artisit Don Davy insists that there’s more to popular-girl Maddy than “rhinestones and cat eyes”. Davy explained that she “designed [Maddy’s] makeup to have a fantastical element to it” because deep down inside, Maddie is a “diehard Romantic”.
