People Went In On Will Smith Not Knowing The Words To ‘La Bamba’ And He Clapped Back

Will Smith has no shame when it comes to Instagram. One minute he’s posting about his days as the Fresh Prince, and the next he’s giving his followers inspirational life lessons. But when he’s on vacation, he goes all out. By that we mean, he turns up the nerdy dad routine and delivers comedic moments that will make you cringe. Case in point, his recent vacation to the Cayman Islands and his live rendition of “La Bamba.”

Will Smith thought it would be funny to join the Pandemix steel drum band for their rendition of “La Bamba.”

As you can hear, it’s pretty terrible — but also kind of hilarious. He said it himself: “imagine that in my bad singing voice.”

Smith clearly didn’t know the words to this iconic Mexican folk song, or maybe he was just playing a joke on all of us. Of course people had to voice their opinions in the comments section.

In a follow-up Instagram post, Smith sang “La Bamba” again.

Smith started the video, in Spanish, saying, “Many of you wrote in the comments section that I didn’t know the words to ‘La Bamba.'” He then went in and sang the song at the top of his lungs.

Smith has been showing us his Spanish skills for years so this should no be a surprise.

Even though he’s not singing in Spanish in “Miami,” the entire track has Latin influences and the song includes the Spanish verse: “Bienvenidos a Miami.” Smith was reluctant to include the Spanish at first.

One of the producers told GQ, “It was my idea that the woman would say “Bienvenidos a Miami” which at the time Will was not in favor of as it might confuse non-Spanish speakers. It was Nas who finally convinced him.”

He’s spoken in Spanish on the red carpet.

You have to give the man credit for consistently speaking Spanish over the years with confidence.

And let’s not forget his collaboration with Bomba Estéreo at the Latin Grammy’s.

Keep up the Spanish practice, Will.

Will Smith And Aunt Viv Finally Confronted Their Decades-Long ‘Fresh Prince’ Rift —”It’s hard enough being a dark-skinned black woman”

Will Smith And Aunt Viv Finally Confronted Their Decades-Long ‘Fresh Prince’ Rift —”It’s hard enough being a dark-skinned black woman”

The Tale of Aunt Viv was probably every millennial’s first-ever encounter with a celebrity feud played out on screen. Vivian Banks was the beloved maternal aunt of Will Smith’s “Fresh Prince” and captivated the hearts of young viewers for her no-nonsense and nurturing character. She was astute, career-driven, and had some incredible vocal chops. Or at least, that’s how she was when actress Janet Hubert portrayed her during the first two seasons. Then actress Daphne Maxwell Reid took on the role. Suddenly Aunt Viv became quite a bit less fiery and more likely to support her children’s strange decisions. Still lovable, not totally recognizable.

Of course, it didn’t take long for rumors about a set dispute between Hubert and Smith to reveal that the original Aunt Viv had been forced out of the role. The rumors became one of the biggest bits of celebrity chisme in homes and got more attention as the characters made jokes about Hubert. You may remember Will occasionally referring to Hubertin family photos as looking “mannish.”

Fortunately, it looks like Will Smith and his former co-star Janet Hubert are finally having a heart-to-heart about their old brawl.

NBC

In an emotional episode of The Red Table Talk, Will Smith sat down with Janet Hubert ahead of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air cast reunion to lay it all out there. Jumping into Jada-mode, Smith sat down with Hubert at the Red Table to discuss why campaigned against Aunt Viv almost thirty years ago.

You might remember Smith claimed in a radio interview soon after Hubert was pushed out from the show that he could “say straight up that Janet Hubert wanted the show to be The Aunt Viv of Bel-Air show, because I know she is going to dog me in the press… She has basically gone from a quarter of a million dollars a year to nothing. She’s mad now, but she’s been mad all along. She said once, ‘I’ve been in the business for 10 years, and this snotty-nosed punk comes along and gets a show.’ No matter what, to her, I’m just the Anti-Christ.”

In response, Hubert hit back saying “He probably is responsible for my firing… He has a lot of clout. It’s too bad that it’s a Black-on-Black attack. I have tried not to name names. I have more class than that. I wish Will would tell the truth. If you’re going to talk, tell the truth. He has gotten me fired from the show, and now he’s trying to get my career snatched away from me.”

Of course, neither of their interviews told the whole story. During the reunion special, Hubert revealed that she found herself stuck in an abusive relationship during the third season and pregnant. “I was no longer laughing, smiling, joking because there were things that were going on that nobody knew about. The cast had no idea what was going on.”

Hubert revealed that during the third season of the show she was edged out with a deal she could not accept. “They said you’ve got two months and two weeks of work, and you cannot work anywhere else,” she revealed. “That meant my salary was cut. I had a new baby and a husband who was out of work. So I said no. I did not accept their offer. I was never fired. So the misconception was always put out there. I was trapped. What could I do? So they said, ‘Okay, we’re going to recast your role.’ And I said, what could I say? I was hurt deeply.”

In a separate interview, Smith admitted he “wasn’t sensitive, I wasn’t perceptive… Now that I’ve had three kids, I’ve learned some things I did not know at the time and I would do things very differently. I can see where I made the set very difficult for Janet.”

Speaking on the Red Table Talk, Hubert told Smith how her life fell apart after show.

“When I left the show, I had this new baby and no one—family disowned me, Hollywood disowned me. My family said you’ve ruined our name,” she explained. “And I wasn’t unprofessional on the set. I just stopped talking to everybody because I didn’t know who to trust because I had been banished. And they said it was you who banished me. Because you were Will. You were a kid. It was hard.”

“I was 21 years old. Everything was a threat to me,” Smith explained. “I was so driven by fear and jokes and comedy, and all of that.”

In a separate interview for the Red Table Talk, Smith spoke with YouTube’s Dr. Ramani Durvasula to go over clips of his sit-down with Hubert to dive into his behavior and mindset as a rising sitcom star.

Smith explained that the childhood abuse he experienced at the hands of his father caused him to feel a deep sense of insecurity. “On my ‘little boy in me’ level, I needed Mommy to think I was great,” he explained, referring to his desire to have Hubert’s approval. “And then once I realized that she didn’t, my dragon woke up.”

This behavior, Hubert says, destroyed her career. “Words can kill,” Hubert told Smith. “I lost everything. Reputation, everything. Everything. I understand, you were able to move forward but you know those words, calling a black woman difficult in Hollywood is the kiss of death. It’s hard enough being a dark-skinned black woman in this business but I felt it was necessary for us to finally move forward. And I’m sorry that I have blasted you to pieces.”

In the end Smith and Hubert seemed to find strength and love for each other in their reunion. “I am so thankful for all the love being shown and the understanding,” Hubert tweeted Thursday. “Will and team let me participate in whatever I wanted and felt comfortable doing. After 27 years of disconnect, we are all different people. It was great seeing everyone, life is too short!”

You Can Live Your ‘Fresh Prince’ Fantasy With An Airbnb Stay At The Actual Bel Air Mansion

If you ever daydreamed about telling a cabbie, “Yo homes, to Bel-Air!” then your chance is finally here. Will Smith and Airbnb have teamed up to offer the actual Bel Air mansion from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Once again, the vacation rental site has graced us with an Airbnb stay fit for the 90s kid in all of us. It wasn’t long ago that Airbnb offered up a stay at Barbie’s Malibu Dream House. There’s also a Hello Kitty apartment in Japan and the actual house from the series Twilight.

Of course, we should all still be doing our part to minimize the risk of Coronavirus and that’s why this Airbnb stay is only available to residents of Los Angeles county. But if you’re like me, all this time cooped up at home, under quarantine, following social distancing guidelines probably has you longing for some excuse – any excuse –  to leave the house. Well, now here’s the perfect excuse.

Will Smith and Airbnb team up to rent out the mansion from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Yes, it’s true! Although it’s been 30 years since the show first hit the airwaves, the Bel Air mansion from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is still a very real place – and it’s soon available to rent on Airbnb.

Starting on September 29, Airbnb will give you the chance to book a stay at the home in groups of up to two. The five available dates, which only cost $30 in honor of the show’s 30th anniversary, are October 2, 5, 8, 11, and 14.

And since they’ve partnered up with the ‘Fresh Prince’ himself, guests will have access to the wing of the house where Smith’s character called home, as well as to a poolside lounge area and dining room. Other perks include access to Will’s wardrobe and a virtual welcome by DJ Jazzy Jeff.

The only disclaimer: because of Covid-19, those lucky guests must prove residency in LA County and be able to prove they’re from the same household. Airbnb also states that the rental will be compliant with CDC rules and follow the enhanced cleaning protocol made by Airbnb as well.

These accommodations look hella fresh and are definitely Will Smith approved.

Although Airbnb states that guests will have access to the wing of the property where Will Smith crashed, you obviously won’t be locked in the bedroom for the entire stay.

Here’s how Airbnb describes your once-in-a-lifetime stay: “It’s your crib for the night, so feel free to act like you own the place. My wing of the mansion includes my bedroom (great for naps), a full bathroom (great for spitting bars in the shower), pool area (great for dips), an outdoor lounge, and the dining room (great for eating obviously). And you gotta do it like my guy DJ Jazzy Jeff so don’t forget your sunglasses!”

Oh, and the best part: Will Smith is the host.

Your stay comes with all sorts of incredible perks!

The mansion from every 90s kids dreams is still as fly as it ever was. Bold graffiti art, posh interiors, timeless family portraits, and Philly cheesesteaks served on silver platters will give visitors the full 90s glam experience. The listing adds that guests will be able to enjoy the following:

  • Lacing up a fresh pair of Air Jordans before shooting some b-ball in the bedroom.
  • Spinning throwback classics all night on turntables just like DJ Jazzy Jeff’s.
  • Donning a fly look from Will’s closet, from argyle prepster to all-star athlete and Bel-Air Athletics gear.
  • Soaking up the sun poolside on luxe lounge chairs.
  • Being (virtually) welcomed to the mansion by none other than DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Those looking to book a night at the Banks home should note that the house rules follow local COVID-19 guidelines and rules. Airbnb also said visitors can also rest assured knowing that the king-size bed will be cleaned in protocol in accordance with CDC rules and consistent with the company’s enhanced cleaning measures.

This is not the first time Airbnb has offered the chance to stay in homes that take me back to my days as a kid. In 2019 you could stay at the Barbie Malibu Dreamhouse for just $60 a night, and later this month, residents in Deschutes County, Oregon, have the chance to spend the night at the last remaining Blockbuster video store.
