Samantha Barbash Said Jennifer Lopez Should Not Have Played Her In ‘Hustlers,’ It Would Have Been Better With Cardi B

Jennifer Lopez cannot believe the incredibly positive reviews she’s getting over her lead role in the film “Hustlers.” She was so moved that she cried on national TV. Last week while being interviewed by Hoda Kotb, Lopez expressed her emotional reaction over the surprising reviews for her role, which some critics say could get her an Acadamy Award nomination. Here’s just a snippet of what film critics are saying about the film that made a big debut this weekend. “Hustlers asks what a movie like Goodfellas looks like with women at the center of the story,” one film critic said. “If nothing else, we get to see Jennifer Lopez command the screen as easily as Ramona does the stage, offering up a seductive awards-worthy performance that makes us remember why she became a movie star in the first place,” another said

There is at least one person who isn’t raving about Lopez’s role, and that’s the one who inspired the film.

Samantha Barbash, the woman who inspired “Hustlers,” said she would have liked to have seen Cardi B in the lead role instead of Jennifer Lopez.

The 45-year-old said in an interview with Hollywood Life that rapper Cardi B should have portrayed her instead of the veteran actress, even though this is Cardi’s first film. “I said it from day one, even to the producer. Cardi doesn’t have the acting skills that Jennifer does, but Cardi could relate more to who I was because even though she wasn’t in the same club, we were in the same industry,” she told the lifestyle website. “If Cardi took some acting lessons and shadowed me, I’m sure that she would have played a better role for my character.”

Barbash goes on to say that she is flattered that Lopez wanted to play her in a movie but stresses that the film got several things wrong about her.

For starters, Barbash wasn’t a stripper at all. The film, based on a 2015 New York magazine article, shows Lopez as a stripper who ends up drugging wealthy bankers and robs them of their money. However, Barbash said she was never a stripper. Barbash actually worked at a strip club in New York City as a hostess. Yes, the other stuff about the drugs and taking their money is correct, but seeing Lopez play her a stripper didn’t sit well with her. Barbash also said that Lopez never reached out to her in order to learn about her mannerisms, which is what actors do when they’re portraying real-life characters. Even when the real-life character is deceased, actors still study old footage to learn more about the role they are playing. You may recall the extensive research Lopez said she did to portray Selena Quintanilla. She even slept in her bed to get into deep character.

Earlier this year, Barbash said she would release her own memoir about the ordeal (which she did) that got her 5 years probation and said she planned to sue the filmmakers.

“This is a living nightmare,” Barbash said in April in the New York Post after videos leaked of Lopez on a stripper pole. “So now I’m going to have to do a lawsuit. I’m getting a gag order.” Bruno Gioffre, also said back then, that Barbash was “considering all legal avenues with the possibility injunctive relief, including a lawsuit.” The movie was made despite her legal threats. Today, Barbash is an entrepreneur and owns her own spa business.

We can see why she would have preferred to see Cardi B in the title role.

The Bronx rapper did admit to drugging men and robbing them, just like the characters did in the movie “Hustlers.” In 2017, Barbash was charged for conspiracy, assault, and grand larceny in exchange for five years probation

In March, Card admitted on social media that during her stint as a stripper in New York she too did what the “Hustlers” did in the movie. “I had to go strip, I had to go, ‘Oh yeah, you want to f*ck me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, let’s go to this hotel,’ and I drugged n*****s up and I robbed them. That’s what I used to do.”

Soon after that post, Cardi said she it was wrong of her to do that and has since tried to make a better life for herself.

Fans Grow Frustrated With Cardi B After She Once Again Defends Offset From Cheating Allegations

UMG Recordings, Inc.

We all know by now that Cardi B isn’t shy when it comes to talking about her relationship with offset. This time, she was addressing yet another round of cheating allegations that have been leveled at her husband. On Tuesday, Cardi B took to Instagram live to set the record straight about the latest incident in the long line of drama the couple has been involved in.

It all started on Tuesday, when Tekashi 6ix9ine’s girlfriend Sarah “Jade” Wattley revealed on Instagram that she was receiving DMs from Offset, one of which read “miss you fr [sic]”. Wattley, for her part was not impressed, captioning the post: “Your wife Cardi B has an open criminal case. Why are you writing me[?]”. In case you need a refresher, Wattley is one of the women that has accused Cardi of assaulting her outside a strip club.

But according to both Offset and Cardi, the entire DM exchange was a result of his Instagram account being hacked.

After Wattley shared Offset’s DMs with her followers, later that night a series of sexually explicit and offensive Tweets were posted on Offset’s Twitter account. The tweets were so outrageous that it became obvious to many Twitter users that Offset was not the one writing them. The logical conclusion was to believe that, he had, indeed, been hacked.

But, some critics have been quick to point out that the timing of the very out-of-character Tweets from Offset seemed to be a little too convenient. There has even been some speculation that Offset staged the offensive tweets in order to cover up his transgressions. As one observant Twitter user observed: “Offset sent the DM at 1:36AM and [Wattley] posted it at 2:30PM. Then he got “hacked” at 2:35PM…He should have gotten the tweets off right after he sent the DM”.

Cardi, for her part, didn’t seem to be taking the entire debacle too seriously.

The 27-year-old “Clout” rapper got on IG live (along with Offset  and Kulture) to address her fans. Looking a little disheveled and more than a little sleepy, Cardi took turns addressing both the camera and her husband. In a statement that seemed to be pretty supportive of her husband and trusting of his actions, she said:

“Hey guys, so as you can see, this guy’s Instagram has been hacked,” she said. “I know babe, you’ve done some dumb shit. Everybody knows he’s done some dumb shit. But come on now, [he’s] not dumb, he’s not crazy, we’ve been so good, we had a sweet weekend, our life has been good, he’s not going to play himself like that. That’s why I’m not going to entertain that, that’s why I’m not getting rowdy. Simple as that”.

This latest scandal is simply another addition to the dramatic chronicles of Offset and Cardi.

Not did Offset admit to being unfaithful to Cardi, but Cardi B felt that she needed to retaliate against the women with whom he cheated with. In August of 2018, Cardi was allegedly involved in a premeditated violent altercation outside Angels NYC Strip Club–an altercation that left Cardi facing two felony counts

Unsurprisingly, the reaction to Cardi B’s Instagram video defending Offset has been mixed. A lot of people are fed up with Cardi defending a man who has, historically, treated her with little respect.

And as with most scandals that involved Belcalis Almanzar, Twitter has not hesitated to air their thoughts on Cardi’s handling of another cheating scandal.

Because Cardi has been so previously open with her personal life, many people feel invested in her personal life to the degree where they want to comment on it publicly. And a lot of people don’t think Cardi is making the smartest decision by sticking by Offset.

This person believes that Cardi may be defending Offset because she’s tired of the drama.

A lot of us have been in this type of situation before.

This person was not about all the Tweets calling Cardi a “clown” for staying with Offset

It is frustrating that Cardi is the one that’s being made fun of when Offset is the one who has admitted to being unfaithful before.

This person felt the need to defend their frustration with Cardi:

It can be frustrating to see a celebrity you admire so much act in a way that you don’t agree with.

And of course, there were the obligatory memes about the entire situation:

Sometimes, all you can do is laugh.

Here Are 8 Latino Christmas Movies You Should Watch To Get Into The Festive Season

Crown Media

This Christmas, when you’re getting comfy on the couch, ready to turn on the TV and watch a Holiday film, one thing is certain: we all know what the leads will look like. It’s safe to assume that the actors of most Christmas movies are white.

Christmas and the whole holiday season is an important time of year for Latinos, traditionally and culturally, so it’s exciting to see Latinos on screen portraying our seasonal conflicts, rituals and family dynamics whenever the opportunity arises —which is not very often tbh.

When it comes to African American and Asian romantic leads in Hallmark holiday movies, the number is zero.

According to the numbers. By the end of 2017, Hallmark premiered a combined 86 new movies on two of its networks, Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. Only six of those movies had non-white romantic leads. That same year, Hallmark debuted three films with Catherine Bell (“Good Witch: Spellbound,” “Home for Christmas Day” and “Christmas in the Air”), who is half Iranian; one movie with Julie Gonzalo (“Falling for Vermont”), who’s from Argentina; and two movies with Alexa PenaVega (“Destination Wedding”), one of which also starred her husband Carlos PenaVega (“Enchanted Christmas”), both of whom are Hispanic.

While there obviously needs to be more seasonal films where Latinos take the lead, there are a number of films that Latinxs can watch to see themselves represented on screen. Keep scrolling to read all about them, here are some of our faves.

Christmas Bounty

Starring Francia Raisa, this film is all about a bounty hunter-turned-elementary shool teacher who tries to keep her past a secret. Shenanigans follow as Raisa’s character reluctantly returns home for the holiday season.

Nothing Like The Holidays

The dysfunctional Puerto Rican Rodriguez family reunite and fight for the first time in years in Alfredo De Villa’s Nothing Like the Holidays.  John Leguizamo, Freddy Rodriguez, Elizabeth Peña, Luis Guzmán, Jay Hernandez and Melonie Diaz appear as the Rodriguezs, gathering for Christmas in their family home in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood.

¡Feliz Christmas, Merry Navidad!

Spanish-language ¡Feliz Christmas, Merry Navidad! directed by Luis Palomo, stars Tere López-Tarín, Carlos Soriano, and Angelina Cruz. The family-friendly magical-realistic holiday film tells the tale of three children who overcome differences in the interest of friendship.  The inspiration Christmas movie exposes the true meaning of Christmas, and the value of interpersonal relationships and family.

El Camino Christmas

Starring Jessica Alba and Emilio Rivera —better known for his role on Sons of Anarchy—this comedy will make you LOL. The story of a man who’s in search for his father and then gets stuck in a liquor store on Christmas eve, has at least a little bit of diversity in it, so why not give it a go?

This Christmas

Laz Alonso and Lupe Ontiveros star in the African American holiday comedy-drama This Christmas, a film about the Whitfield family. The estranged family gathers under the same roof for the first time in seven years, and the attempt to rekindle broken relationships.

A Very Harold And Kumar Christmas

This is one of the most diverse Christmas movies out there. It includes a few Latinx stars in it —Danny Trejo and the Colombian-American actress Paula Garces. The movie is about Kumar and Harold’s holiday adventures and, let’s just say there’s lots of cannabis involved.

Esta Navidad

The 1959 film is somewhat of a cult classic. Directed by Rene Cardoso, the Mexican film is about the Devil’s evil plan to kill Santa Claus. The surreal film is set in Santa’s cloud castle as well as in Mexico City. It’s not a traditional film, but definitely worth seeing.

Holiday in Handcuffs

Mario Lopez and Melissa Joan Hart star in Holiday in Handcuffs, a holiday film about a miserable and lonely waitress and aspiring painter who kidnaps a customer from her job, so that she can introduce him to her family as her boyfriend. Mario Lopez plays the kidnapped fake boyfriend —and I mean, if I had the chance to kidnap Mario Lopez, you best believe I would.
