Samantha Barbash Said Jennifer Lopez Should Not Have Played Her In ‘Hustlers,’ It Would Have Been Better With Cardi B

Jennifer Lopez cannot believe the incredibly positive reviews she’s getting over her lead role in the film “Hustlers.” She was so moved that she cried on national TV. Last week while being interviewed by Hoda Kotb, Lopez expressed her emotional reaction over the surprising reviews for her role, which some critics say could get her an Acadamy Award nomination. Here’s just a snippet of what film critics are saying about the film that made a big debut this weekend. “Hustlers asks what a movie like Goodfellas looks like with women at the center of the story,” one film critic said. “If nothing else, we get to see Jennifer Lopez command the screen as easily as Ramona does the stage, offering up a seductive awards-worthy performance that makes us remember why she became a movie star in the first place,” another said

There is at least one person who isn’t raving about Lopez’s role, and that’s the one who inspired the film.

Samantha Barbash, the woman who inspired “Hustlers,” said she would have liked to have seen Cardi B in the lead role instead of Jennifer Lopez.

The 45-year-old said in an interview with Hollywood Life that rapper Cardi B should have portrayed her instead of the veteran actress, even though this is Cardi’s first film. “I said it from day one, even to the producer. Cardi doesn’t have the acting skills that Jennifer does, but Cardi could relate more to who I was because even though she wasn’t in the same club, we were in the same industry,” she told the lifestyle website. “If Cardi took some acting lessons and shadowed me, I’m sure that she would have played a better role for my character.”

Barbash goes on to say that she is flattered that Lopez wanted to play her in a movie but stresses that the film got several things wrong about her.

For starters, Barbash wasn’t a stripper at all. The film, based on a 2015 New York magazine article, shows Lopez as a stripper who ends up drugging wealthy bankers and robs them of their money. However, Barbash said she was never a stripper. Barbash actually worked at a strip club in New York City as a hostess. Yes, the other stuff about the drugs and taking their money is correct, but seeing Lopez play her a stripper didn’t sit well with her. Barbash also said that Lopez never reached out to her in order to learn about her mannerisms, which is what actors do when they’re portraying real-life characters. Even when the real-life character is deceased, actors still study old footage to learn more about the role they are playing. You may recall the extensive research Lopez said she did to portray Selena Quintanilla. She even slept in her bed to get into deep character.

Earlier this year, Barbash said she would release her own memoir about the ordeal (which she did) that got her 5 years probation and said she planned to sue the filmmakers.

“This is a living nightmare,” Barbash said in April in the New York Post after videos leaked of Lopez on a stripper pole. “So now I’m going to have to do a lawsuit. I’m getting a gag order.” Bruno Gioffre, also said back then, that Barbash was “considering all legal avenues with the possibility injunctive relief, including a lawsuit.” The movie was made despite her legal threats. Today, Barbash is an entrepreneur and owns her own spa business.

We can see why she would have preferred to see Cardi B in the title role.

The Bronx rapper did admit to drugging men and robbing them, just like the characters did in the movie “Hustlers.” In 2017, Barbash was charged for conspiracy, assault, and grand larceny in exchange for five years probation

In March, Card admitted on social media that during her stint as a stripper in New York she too did what the “Hustlers” did in the movie. “I had to go strip, I had to go, ‘Oh yeah, you want to f*ck me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, let’s go to this hotel,’ and I drugged n*****s up and I robbed them. That’s what I used to do.”

Soon after that post, Cardi said she it was wrong of her to do that and has since tried to make a better life for herself.

Being a celebrity has always come with tons of perks and benefits. I mean look at how many of us aspired to be a famous celebrity when we grew up – so many are drawn to the idea of fame and fortune. But life in the spotlight also comes with the burden of increased scrutiny, online hate and trolls – especially in today’s social media landscape.

And it’s becoming more evident with each new story of someone being ‘canceled’, that no matter how famous you are or how much money you have, your fame can’t protect from becoming ‘cancel culture’s’ next victim – just ask Cardi B.

Cardi B is sharing her thoughts on ‘cancel culture’ including recent controversies that have surrounded her career.

Cardi B has been in the spotlight for quite a few years now…and not always for the best of reason. Let’s be honest. But recently, Cardi says that ‘cancel culture’ has been taking a toll on her and she feels that no matter what she does, people will always have something negative to say about her.

The NYC rapper, who recently released the Megan Thee Stallion-featuring ‘WAP’, was speaking to ELLE when she reflected on controversial moments from her past which led to multiple attempts to ‘cancel’ her.

“It’s like I have a target on my back, but it’s not because of my music,” Cardi told ELLE. “Because I haven’t done music for eight months, and people still try to attack me.”

She goes on to say, “I feel like people are attacking me because they want me to feel the pressure of bullying, and they want me to give up, and they want me to say, ‘Oh, I quit music’ or ‘I’ll delete my Instagram, delete my Twitter,’ and I’m not willing to do that. No one will ever have that much power [over] me.”

Much of the controversy started with allegations of drugging and robbing men.

Last year, Cardi was widely condemned after a video resurfaced showing her talking about how she used to “drug and rob” men who attempted to pay her for sex during her time working as a stripper.

The rapper subsequently clarified the comments, saying she “never claimed to be perfect” and that she was “not proud” of her actions. She apologized and showed that she had learned from those mistakes – basically the best case scenario. However, much of the Internet was still not satisfied with her response.

Then people tried canceling her for allegedly having a fake Instagram account to hate on other celebs.

She then addressed the recent allegations claiming that she had a secret Instagram account, saying she “cannot believe 73 people are trying to cancel me over a lie.”

Cardi told Elle: ‘I saw I was trending on Twitter, and I’m like, “What the fuck?” I’m like, “Jesus Christ, what did I do now? Like what?”’

Cardi of course responded in her own way by getting dressed up for the ‘cancel party’ and telling her followers: ‘If I haven’t been posting on Instagram and eating food and that still bothers y’all, that just means I’m really that important in your heart and my press is really part of your soul. And guess what? I don’t give a damn. Bye!’

She goes onto say, “Can you imagine me having a fake Instagram account to talk shit about different artists that I don’t even think about? I’m 27 years old, you know what I’m saying? I’m 27 years old and I have big bills, big responsibilities, and a kid who’s on my ass a lot.”

“If I don’t fucking like somebody, I am going to let them know I don’t fucking like them, or I don’t fuck with them, or I’m not feeling their energy. I’m not going to make a fake Instagram trolling artists, talking shit about artists. Are you crazy?”

However, many agree that Cardi B isn’t without blame.

Most of the time, controversy doesn’t just appear out of thin air. And the case is no different with Cardi B. Not all of the criticism is unwarranted. Cardi B has a long history of making mistakes and saying things she shouldn’t have.

Cardi has made some significant missteps, like her use of anti-Asian slurs and her involvement in an alleged planned attack on two strip club employees. However, the rapper has, for the most part, owned her mistakes and learned from them, educating herself so that she can do things the right way.

Now to try and bring her real life point of view to fans, Cardi B is partnering with OnlyFans.

As Cardi said, she isn’t going to be canceled over a lie. And to make sure she gets her message straight to the people who matter most – her fans – Cardi B has teamed up with OnlyFans. She says she’ll be releasing behind-the-scenes content, addressing ongoing rumours and connecting closer with her fans.

And for us Cardi B fans, the trolls aren’t achieving their goals. Cardi B isn’t going anywhere any time soon. In fact, from her interview with Elle, it’s obvious she’s planning on working even harder. She has a new album coming out that’s tentatively called Tiger Woods, and she says she hopes the album will do what she hopes all of the music in her discography does: inspire genuine confidence in women.

“My music is always going to make a woman feel like a bad bitch,” Cardi explained to Elle. “When you make a woman feel like she’s the baddest bitch in the room, to me, that’s female empowerment.”“Ain’t no way that I’m going to quit,” Cardi asserted. “I don’t give a fuck if the whole world picks on me. I don’t give a fuck if people make up lies about me every single day. I want to make it really clear that nobody can ever make me quit.”

This Video Of A Woman Doing ASL To Cardi B’s ‘WAP’ Is Too Lit

@Freelove19xx/ Twitter

Just when you thought the hype around Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” might be trickling down, a recent video of a deaf woman translating the lyrics has gone viral.

After dropping her big track collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, Dominican/Trinidadian rapper Cardi B has had just about everybody repeating the beloved lines of the song over and over again. But the most important rendition of the big hit is one done by a woman who does ASL and performs to “WAP” like a boss.

The now-viral clip is beyond entertaining and inspiring to watch. Mostly because the woman in the video not only has the MOVES she also has the lyrics on lock.

A 25-year old TikTok and Twitter user by the name of Raven Sutton went viral for her recent “WAP” ASL cover.

Known on the social platforms as @Freelove19xx, she went viral over the weekend after she recorded herself passionately repeating the lyrics to “WAP” in ASL while channeling the slick and sexy vibe of the Cardi B x Megan Thee Stallion hit. In the video, the TikTok user can be seen interpreting each line of the WAP lyrics while expertly swaying her hips and bopping to the music.

In the comments, users questioned how @Freelove19xx was able to keep up with the rhythm of the music without hearing, she revealed that she has a “speaker that vibrates my whole house lmao. I can feel the music.”

Speaking to Fierce by mitú Sutton explained “What I loved most about the WAP song is that Cardi B and Megan are both successful women that aren’t afraid to speak their truth. They do not let other people’s expectations define them.”

Sutton who was born deaf after the deaf gene was passed down to her by her father told us that ASL is her native language and that she hopes her video shows nondeaf people that deaf people can do just as much as they can. “It’s a common assumption that Deaf people can’t do certain things because we can’t hear. Things like talking, dancing, listening to music etc,” she explained. “Truth is, us Deaf people enjoy the same things as everyone else. We ask to be included and accommodated so that the things we enjoy do not become a burden. Examples of accommodations are providing ASL interpreters, caption your videos, and learn ASL. Accessibility is important. Let’s all put in the work together.”

Sutton shared that people can learn basic ASL tools at Gallaudet University.

Sutton says that since post her video she’s noticed that “people are recognizing that there are a lot of Deaf Talent and creators out there. People are wanting to learn ASL. This is a great thing and I hope the recognition and fire energy continues.”

Users inspired by the tweet were quick to celebrate @Freelove19xx for her post.

“A lot of times the variations of a sign are used for a song’s chorus so that it doesn’t seem too repetitive or redundant. It’s a wholeass art, as a hearing person that knows ASL, it’s amazing to see EVERY DAMN TIME lol,” one user commented.

“I absolutely love this. I’ve taken deaf studies & ASL classes & trying to learn 1 sign a week since then. hopefully, I can be signing like u someday!” another user pointed out. “Its hard w no one to practice w but i hope to gain more friends in the deaf community to help me w that. Anyway, you did amazing!”

“Ahhhhh I have no words!!” an adoring commenter replied. “This is grounds for a marriage proposal.”

Thanks to the clip, fans are already demanding the obvious:

“Has anyone started a petition asking Cardi to have Bluejay in her next video yet?” one user asked.

As of this publication, @Freelove19xx has yet to respond to mitú’s request for comment.
