“We had no idea that the show was going to be that iconic.”
In a recent interview with “Today,” Panamanian-Trinidadian, American actress Tatyana Ali reminisces on her role in the famous ’90s sitcom, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” In this comedy television series, Ali played the role of Ashley Banks, the youngest daughter of Phillip and Vivian Banks and cousin of Will Smith.
Ali recalls her experience working with Will Smith, who she describes as “incredibly funny and a great story teller and so charismatic.” Ali remembers the immense dedication Smith had to his role in the show as it was one of his first acting experiences. He had the entire script memorized, so sometimes Ali would catch him secretly mouthing hers and everyone else’s lines during their dialogue exchanges.
Ali had the opportunity of being on set with guest stars Oprah Winfrey, Zsa Zsa Gábor and Donald Trump. Zsa Zsa Gábor was Ali’s absolute favorite because she was so kind, honest and open. Gábor wasn’t ashamed to share all of her beauty and plastic surgery experiences, which is something Ali loved. As for Trump, the only thing Ali recalls is the strange appearance of his hair.
Ali admits that she never thought the show was going to become so iconic. Although acting is a job that takes a lot of time and continuous effort, Ali appreciates that she was allowed to be herself on the set of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” She was allowed to be a kid, which was important. She was only 11 years old at the time and grew up on the set with her school books on one side and her script on another. “It was magical,” Ali expresses.
If you ever daydreamed about telling a cabbie, “Yo homes, to Bel-Air!” then your chance is finally here. Will Smith and Airbnb have teamed up to offer the actual Bel Air mansion from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Once again, the vacation rental site has graced us with an Airbnb stay fit for the 90s kid in all of us. It wasn’t long ago that Airbnb offered up a stay at Barbie’s Malibu Dream House. There’s also a Hello Kitty apartment in Japan and the actual house from the series Twilight.
Of course, we should all still be doing our part to minimize the risk of Coronavirus and that’s why this Airbnb stay is only available to residents of Los Angeles county. But if you’re like me, all this time cooped up at home, under quarantine, following social distancing guidelines probably has you longing for some excuse – any excuse – to leave the house. Well, now here’s the perfect excuse.
Will Smith and Airbnb team up to rent out the mansion from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Yes, it’s true! Although it’s been 30 years since the show first hit the airwaves, the Bel Air mansion from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is still a very real place – and it’s soon available to rent on Airbnb.
Starting on September 29, Airbnb will give you the chance to book a stay at the home in groups of up to two. The five available dates, which only cost $30 in honor of the show’s 30th anniversary, are October 2, 5, 8, 11, and 14.
And since they’ve partnered up with the ‘Fresh Prince’ himself, guests will have access to the wing of the house where Smith’s character called home, as well as to a poolside lounge area and dining room. Other perks include access to Will’s wardrobe and a virtual welcome by DJ Jazzy Jeff.
The only disclaimer: because of Covid-19, those lucky guests must prove residency in LA County and be able to prove they’re from the same household. Airbnb also states that the rental will be compliant with CDC rules and follow the enhanced cleaning protocol made by Airbnb as well.
These accommodations look hella fresh and are definitely Will Smith approved.
Although Airbnb states that guests will have access to the wing of the property where Will Smith crashed, you obviously won’t be locked in the bedroom for the entire stay.
Here’s how Airbnb describes your once-in-a-lifetime stay: “It’s your crib for the night, so feel free to act like you own the place. My wing of the mansion includes my bedroom (great for naps), a full bathroom (great for spitting bars in the shower), pool area (great for dips), an outdoor lounge, and the dining room (great for eating obviously). And you gotta do it like my guy DJ Jazzy Jeff so don’t forget your sunglasses!”
Oh, and the best part: Will Smith is the host.
Your stay comes with all sorts of incredible perks!
The mansion from every 90s kids dreams is still as fly as it ever was. Bold graffiti art, posh interiors, timeless family portraits, and Philly cheesesteaks served on silver platters will give visitors the full 90s glam experience. The listing adds that guests will be able to enjoy the following:
Lacing up a fresh pair of Air Jordans before shooting some b-ball in the bedroom.
Spinning throwback classics all night on turntables just like DJ Jazzy Jeff’s.
Donning a fly look from Will’s closet, from argyle prepster to all-star athlete and Bel-Air Athletics gear.
Soaking up the sun poolside on luxe lounge chairs.
Being (virtually) welcomed to the mansion by none other than DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Those looking to book a night at the Banks home should note that the house rules follow local COVID-19 guidelines and rules. Airbnb also said visitors can also rest assured knowing that the king-size bed will be cleaned in protocol in accordance with CDC rules and consistent with the company’s enhanced cleaning measures.
This is not the first time Airbnb has offered the chance to stay in homes that take me back to my days as a kid. In 2019 you could stay at the Barbie Malibu Dreamhouse for just $60 a night, and later this month, residents in Deschutes County, Oregon, have the chance to spend the night at the last remaining Blockbuster video store.
That’s right the 90s classic starring Will Smith is being flipped-turned upside down into a dramatic television series.
You might remember a year ago when a creative YouTube trailer of a dramatic version of the beloved series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” went viral. When the original trailer first came out, fans could not stop talking about the accurate POV the series presented of the original NBC comedy. The fresh trailer clipped out the goofy and playful nature that a young Will Smith presented in the original series and revealed a much more dramatic reimagining of the series about a street-wise teen who moved from West Philadelphia to Bel Air, California. The trailer was such a success among fans that it went so far as to capture the attention of the original star of the series.
Now, the series that catapulted Will Smith to stardom is getting a remake.
The new series called “Bel-Air” is described as a “dramatic take” on the former series that ran for six seasons.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new series has been in the works for well over a year after the four-minute trailer went viral last March. The creator behind the series, Morgan Cooper, has been a longtime Fresh Prince fan and directed and posted the trailer which reimagined the series with much darker undertones. Cooper will produce the series alongside the original Will Smith. He will also co-write and direct.
What’s more, the new series is headed back home
Just a month ago the repackaged drama is being shopped to streamers and will be co-produced by Smith’s Westbrook Studios and the original producer of the series: Universal TV.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Peacock, Netflix and HBO Max were some of the top streamers bidding on the series. “HBO Max is the current streaming home for the original series,” THR reports. “Bel-Air is described as an hourlong dramatic retelling of the beloved ’90s sitcom that leans into the original premise of Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. With a reimagined vision, Bel-Air will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases of what it means to be a Black man in America today, while still delivering the swagger and fun nods to the original show.”
“We have just officially closed the deal with Peacock with an unprecedented two-season order from a pitch,” Smith announced in the video. “I’ve been in this business for 30 years, and that does not happen.”
Speaking about his excitement over seeing his classic series get a modern twist, Smith said “The Carlton character — a Black, young Republican, modern-day? The heat that will be stirred up between these characters. It’s like, what’s the Hilary character in a world of Instagram and social media?”
Besides Smith, the new series will see original participants such as Quincy Jones, Benny Medina, and creators Andy & Susan Borowitzreturn return as executive producers.
You may remember that the original “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” series ran for six seasons from 1990-1996 on NBC. At the time it was produced by Jones and Warner Bros. TV and it starred young Will Smith as the titular character “Will Smith” and featured actors James Avery, Alfonso Ribeiro, Karyn Parsons, Tatyana M. Ali, Joseph Marcell, Janet Hubert-Whitten and Daphne Maxwell Reid.
