Why Do Mexico’s Football Fans Keep Going Unpunished For Shouting Homophobic Slurs At Opposing Players

If you’ve ever been to a sports match, it’s pretty likely you’ll encounter some serious macho behavior from fans and players alike.

Things are typically no different at soccer games – even world-class events like the World Cup or the Copa Americana – where homophobic slurs are often used to taunt opposing teams.

Unfortunately, that was again the case at this weekend’s Copa Ora game between Mexico and Cuba.

It’s an all too familiar scene at soccer matches, but espeically at those where Mexican futbol fans go. It starts with the building chant of “Eeeehhhhhh” and ends with the homophobic punctuation of “puto.”

On Saturday both the Rose Bowl and Concacaf allowed the anti-gay and homophobic “puto” chant to descend on the crowd as many as 50 times, according to video and people on Twitter.

The response by both Concacaf and the stadium to try to stop the chant were designed to fail and simply pay lip service to people trying to stop the discriminatory behavior.

The chant during Mexico’s 7-0 routing of Cuba was widespread, very loud and involved a huge number of people in the stands.

For many fans it was alarming.

Here, on international television and in front of some 65,000 people, was an anti-gay slur, the Spanish equivalent of “faggot,” being hurled in unison by hundreds of fans at an opposing goalkeeper.

Yet in many ways, it was routine and perhaps even easy to ignore.

After all, authorities did just that for years, as the taunt spread from Mexican club games to the national team last decade. It soon became a community staple, a rite of passage for match-going fans, a so-called tradition that follows the Mexican team almost everywhere it goes.

Just last year at the World Cup in Russia, global soccer’s governing body opened disciplinary proceedings after the chant accompanied German goal kicks during Mexico’s World Cup opener. FIFA not only fined the Mexican federation but threatened more sanctions. It also promised to revoke Fan IDs – essentially tickets – and eject anybody caught yelling the slur.

The “puto” chant is anti-gay and is designed to belittle opposing male players by likening them to prostitutes and women.

The chant is, at its core, indisputably anti-gay and FIFA itself has labeled the chant discriminatory.

Yet soccer organizations allow the chant to persist, negatively affecting LGBTQ fans, players and coaches.

Some on Twitter didn’t mince words in their reaction to Mexico’s fans.

A lot of fans took to Twitter to express their anger and embarrassment at their own team for continuing to act in such a hurtful and childish way.

While a very small minority to continue to claim that the word has zero homophobic meaning.

While some pointed out the inconsistency between different leagues.

Because apparently any homophobic slurs are completely banned at Los Angeles Football Club matches but the Rose Bowl Stadium doesn’t have a similar ban.

One Twitter user even tweeted a potential solution – at least for those watching the game on TV.

I mean muting the very moment when the chant is about to happen is one way to shield viewers from the blatant homophobia…

Or, I mean, fans could just stop.

Founder Of Nation’s Largest Conversion Therapy Group For Gay People Has Come Out As A Gay Man And Why Aren’t We Surprised

McKrae Game, the founder of one of the country’s largest conversion therapy programs has come out as gay and has apologized for the damage he has caused. No apology will ever be enough. Conversion therapy is nothing short of issuing psychological warfare on an innocent person because of who they love and who they are.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, LGBTQ+ young people who are “highly rejected” by their caregivers compared to those who are not, are eight more times likely to have attempted suicide, six times more likely to have depression, three times more likely to use illegal drugs, and three times more likely to be at high risk for HIV and STDs.

Anything short of acceptance of LGBTQ+ people puts their lives at risk. Moreover, it is nothing short of immoral and quite frankly, narcissistic to think you can decide who someone ought to be or that your opinion matters more than scientific evidence.

The result of rejection is LGBTQ+ children who hate themselves and grow up to hate other LGBTQ+ people. McKrae Game is a product of a bigotted society, it’s very sad, but he must be held accountable for inflicting so much more pain and trauma.

Hope for Wholeness

McKrae Game, now 51, founded Hope for Wholeness, a faith-based conversion therapy in South Carolina, two decades ago. Game married a woman and preached to thousands of people that they could change their sexual orientation, all the while being gay himself.

In 2017, he was abruptly fired by Hope for Wholeness’ board of directors. This summer he came out and severed ties with the organization.

“I was a religious zealot that hurt people,” Game told the Post and Courier. “People said they attempted suicide over me and the things I said to them. People, I know, are in therapy because of me. Why would I want that to continue?”

Conversion Therapy Is a for-profit business.

Game has not just hurt thousands of LGBTQ+, he has profited from that pain. That pain was his livelihood. Even in his Facebook apology, Game announced an upcoming book about his journey. Will he be refunding all of the money stolen from families? Will he be paying back damages for pain and suffering? I haven’t located any such declaration.

“Conversion therapy is not just a lie, but it’s very harmful,” Game said. “Because it’s false advertising.”

While it is unclear how many people have been “counseled” by Hope for Wholeness, an IRS Form 990 from 2007 revealed the ministry had administered 528 counseling sessions and held 60 group meetings that year. Game believes they’ve hurt thousands.

“I created it all,” Game said of Hope for Wholeness. “We have harmed generations of people.”

Things are changing.

In 2014, nine former founders and leaders of conversion therapy programs published a letter on the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

“As former ex-gay leaders, having witnessed the incredible harm done to those who attempted to change their sexual orientation or gender identity, we join together in calling for a ban on conversion therapy,” they wrote. “It is our firm belief that it is much more productive to support, counsel, and mentor LGBTQ individuals to embrace who they are in order to live happy, well-adjusted lives.”

According to a 2018 study by UCLA’s Williams Institute, roughly 700,000 LGBTQ+ people have undergone conversion therapy. In 2018, the Trevor Project launched “50 Bills in 50 States,” a lobbying campaign to pass legislation barring conversation therapy on minors. Today 18 states and Puerto Rico have laws banning and regulating the use of conversion therapy on minors.

Conversion Therapy does not work.

Some caregivers may believe that they are giving a child the best chance at a good life by trying to “straighten” them out to spare them the bigotry and adversity that comes with being marginalized. Point blank, there is no scientific evidence that suggests you can change someone’s sexual orientation.

In 2007, an American Psychological Association task force examined the existing research to determine if conversion therapy was effective, they concluded that the “results of scientifically valid research indicate that it is unlikely that individuals will be able to reduce same-sex attractions or increase other-sex sexual attractions through sexual orientation change efforts (SOCEs).”

Where do we go from here?

There is this pervasive myth that when someone really hates LGBTQ+ people they must be a member of the community themselves. This harmful stereotype attributes the oppression of LGBTQ+ people to themselves. That’s unlikely and offensive. The reality is that when the dominant culture asserts cis-heterosexuality as the only acceptable form of love LGBTQ+ people internalize those harmful messages and worst of all, start to believe it.

If you are convinced who you are is wrong then the only form of self-improvement is changing yourself, and when you can’t, you inevitably blame yourself even more. This is how trauma is formed and passed onto others. Acceptance is the only answer. Acceptance is the only effective liberation.

A Small Crowd Marched In Boston For ‘Straight Pride’ And AOC Had The Perfect Response

White people across the country are freaking out. Okay, let me rephrase that. Some white people with too much time on their hands are growing increasingly paranoid that non-white and non-heterosexual people are taking over this great land we call the United States. Not only are white supremacists wreaking havoc, killing innocent people, but we also have ridiculous white people parading around town, causing pure embarrassment.

Yesterday, an estimated 200 people marched in downtown Boston for the first (and hopefully the last) “Straight Pride Parade.”

Back in June, right in the beginning of Pride month, three men formed the Super Happy Fun America organization and said they too would have their own pride day to celebrate straight people everywhere. One thing they didn’t openly say is that organizers of the “Straight Pride Parade” also have affiliations with white supremacy groups. Needless to say, the concept for the “Straight Pride Parade” drew instant ridicule yet the parade went on as planned. The permit for the parade stated they were expecting around 2,000 people, but that was not the case. More than a thousand counter-protesters showed up and police report that 36 people were arrested

People on social media could not help but mock these sad individuals, but the best line came from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“For men who are allegedly so ‘proud’ of being straight, they seem to show real incompetence at attracting women to their event. Seems more like a ‘I-Struggle-With-Masculinity’ parade to me. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Hope they grow enough over the next year to support/join LGBTQ fam next #Pride!”

Her tweet was in response to a video of the “Straight Pride Parade” that showed people holding the American flag, others in dinosaur costumes, a majority with MAGA hats, and a huge Trump float.

As we mentioned, 36 people were arrested, and many of those were counter-protesters. Rep. Ayanna Pressley urged people to donate to the Solidarity Against Hate Legal Defense Fund that would help contribute to the bail of the individuals arrested.

“Join me right now in making a contribution,” Rep. Pressley tweeted. “Thank You to the allies & accomplices who stood in the gap & laid their bodies on the line today in affront #LGBT hate march. To everyone feeling unseen & vulnerable today…we got you. Equitable outrage. Our destinies & freedoms are tied.”

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez told her followers to do the same.

“One way to support the local LGBTQ community impacted by Boston’s white supremacist parade? Contribute to the Bail Fund for the activists who put themselves on the line protecting the Boston community: (Any $ left over goes to @MassBailFund + @Boston_GLASS ).”

This is not the first time Rep. Ocasio-Cortez made a hilarious jab at the organizers and supporters of “Straight Pride Parade.”

When the initial concept was first announced, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “Will ‘Straight Pride’ be a Freaky Friday type situation where all of our history books, movies, stories, media, news, etc feature mostly LGBTQ+ people & perspectives? Will people have to come out as straight? What would folks march in? Socks w/ sandals on? Dad jeans?” Well, she wasn’t far off. People were wearing weird-ass clothes and clown costumes.

Here are some other of our favorite tweets from yesterday’s bogus parade.

Jemain Clement from Flight of the Concords nailed it!

If this parade is so straight, why are there more men than women?

In all honesty, there was a handful of women there, but why didn’t did their girlfriends or wives come and support them? Oh, wait…never mind.

Well, this is a good representation of the parade: sad and lonely.

That trash bin actually looks like it’s having more fun.

Why would “normal” straight people want to be associated with this?

A shark? Really?

Maybe next year they will change the name to what it actually is.

Why hide its real message?

By the way, these are the organizers of “Straight Pride Parade.”

Things that make you go hmm…

Now, if you really want to be confused by these odd people that put on this spectacle and refer to themselves as “Super Fun Happy America,” they proclaim to be “advocates on behalf of the straight community in order to build respect, inclusivity, equality, diversity, unity, solidarity, dignity, social mobility, empowerment, sustainability, justice, awareness, intersectionality, human rights, education, access, participation, dialogue, visibility, tolerance, and alliances with people from all walks of life. We encourage everyone to embrace our community’s diverse history, culture, and identity regardless of sexual orientation.”

We know that line is complete BS because the major of people there were white, and I didn’t see one LGBT person supporting their cause. They are the antithesis of inclusivity.

Straight Pride is code for Trump rally.

Perhaps a MAGA permit was more expensive so they went with “Straight Pride Parade.”

We hope this sad display of a gathering will finally put this question to rest.

The answer: because every day is a straight pride parade.
