“I want to talk to you because you are the cutest thing I have seen.”
Before “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Oprah Winfrey appeared on television as the morning host for “A.M. Chicago.” It was on this show in 1984, that Winfrey introduced the Latin boy band Menudo onto the stage. However, there was one band member in particular that Winfrey paid special attention to, and that was Ricky Martin.
Although the band Menudo was formed in 1977, Martin didn’t join the band until 1984. Soon after, the band blew up, reaching it’s highest popularity in the mid 1980s.
Right after Menudo performed on “A.M. Chicago,” Winfrey walked directly towards Martin. “I want to talk to you because you are the cutest thing I have seen,” she said. And of course, the fangirls in the audience responded in 100 percent agreement.
At the time of Martin’s appearance on “A.M. Chicago,” he was only 13 years old – making him the youngest member in the band (and obviously the cutest). After hushing all of the fangirls in the crowd, Winfrey asked Martin about how he went about celebrating the news that he was chosen to be one of the band members of Menudo. Martin told Winfrey that he first told the great news to his entire family and then had a disco party to celebrate.
After talking to Martin, Winfrey walked towards the audience to pick a person to bring onto the stage and meet Martin. She picked a little girl, who she carried on her hip and took to Martin for a hug and a kiss.
Fast forward to 2010, Oprah brings Martin as a guest on her show and surprises him with that same girl who he hugged and kissed in 1984. After watching a rerun of this 1984 “A.M. Chicago” episode and getting to see the exact girl he had met 26 years ago, Martin was left with happiness, nostalgia, laughter and shock (AND SO WAS I). ?
While some younger folks may not remember Jenny from the Block, EVERYONE knows who J Lo is. An iconic, impactful, and inspiring presence in Hollywood since the 1990s, Jennifer Lopez continues to blow our minds as an incredibly talented actress and performer (Have you seen Hustlers yet? Hot damn.). And in case she doesn’t impress you enough with her tireless schedule and extensive resume, have you ever laid eyes on this woman? It’s become almost cliché, but J Lo truly seems to defy the process of aging—if anything, she is actually becoming more gorgeous over time. J Lo just turned 50, and in addition to wowing us with her grace, authenticity, and talent, she is a living example of how nutrition and exercise can really work wonders on a person—OR, let’s face it, she might just a mystical creature who is totally untouched by the laws of biology. Quién sabe.
With all this in mind, it may come as a shock that J Lo—though she certainly knows she’s a queen—hasn’t always been convinced of her ability to kick life’s booty as an independent woman. In a recent interview with The New York Times Magazine, J Lo spoke about her role in Hustlers, saying, “I’ve always been so much a romantic, so much about having a relationship, and this woman is the total opposite. And to play that, to live in those shoes, to walk in those very high heels, in that skin, made me realize I’m out here on my own.”
“That’s what I need to teach my daughter,” she added. “That aspect of it: that you can do it on your own.”
And when you examine J Lo’s career, she has truly done so much, visibly growing and evolving as an artist since her breakout role in the 1997 Selena biopic.
Several folks may not know that amid all of J Lo’s hot bops and cinematic hits, she also pioneered Google Images . . . well, kind of. She didn’t so much as “pioneer” Google Images as inspire its creation back in 2000. And why, you might ask, was J Lo the reason for this now-ubiquitous tool, a tool utilized on a literally constant basis to search all kinds of random content?
Oh, we’ll tell you why. You might remember a dress—a green dress, with long sleeves, a plunging neckline, and sheer jungle-print fabric that trailed all the way to the floor. An exotic dress. A Versace dress. This exotic Versace dress:

Jennifer Lopez wore this dress to the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards in 2000, and people were SHOOK. They took to the internet, hoping to find photos of this groundbreaking moment in fashion, but they fell short—at the time, Google only loaded text-based search results. And while it took some time for Google Images to come about after this frenzy, J Lo is credited as the impetus for its existence.
In 2015, former Google CEO and executive chairman Eric Schmidt wrote on Project Syndicate, “People wanted more than just text. This first became apparent after the 2000 Grammy Awards, where Jennifer Lopez wore a green dress that, well, caught the world’s attention. At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen. But we had no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: JLo wearing that dress. Google Image Search was born.”
And the Google Image search for the green dress has persisted over the past 20 years. Cathy Edwards, director of engineering and product for Google Images, told GQ that “people are still doing queries for ‘Jennifer Lopez green dress,’ ‘Jennifer Lopez jungle print dress,’ ‘Jennifer Lopez Grammys dress,’ [that] sort of thing.” And now those searches are probably surging right now, for a couple of reasons.
J Lo appeared in a remixed version of that infamous green dress back in September, when Versace debuted its Spring/Summer 2020 collection at Milan Fashion Week. And recently, she’s appeared in a Versace ad campaign with Kendall Jenner, rocking futuristic digs that “explore the blurring of lines between public and private life in today’s internet society,” according to an Instagram caption.
In a statement about her recent collaboration with Versace, J Lo said, “In terms of my career, the Jungle dress really marked a moment in time. To me, Versace represents empowerment and putting something beautiful out into the world. It’s a dream to collaborate with my friend Donatella again on this gorgeous campaign and to create something new and fresh out of a piece of iconic fashion history.
Well, we’re excited too, J Lo. Just check the Google Image stats for this new iteration of that classic green dress.
Ricky Martin seems to be living his best life with his husband, Jwan Yosef, as they welcomed the arrival of their fourth child into their growing family. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Martin shared a precious photo of Renn Martin-Yosef, who is seen sleeping, bundled in a pear-printed swaddle, and held by a smiling, overjoyed Martin.
While accepting a Human Rights Campaign award for his LGBTQ+ advocacy last month, Martin announced that the couple was pregnant. “My husband Jwan, I love you,” he announced from the podium. “My beautiful twins, Valentino and Matteo, they’re also here, I love you with all my heart, you’re my strength, you inspire me every day, you motivate me to keep doing what I’m doing and you guys are amazing kids. You guys are amazing. I love you.” Then, the news: “And by the way, I have to announce that we are pregnant. We are waiting. I love big families.”
Wait no longer, fam! Renn looks like the angel the Martin-Yosef family deserves.
“Nuestro hijo Renn Martin-Yosef ha nacido,” Martin captioned the Instagram share, which means, “Our son, Renn Martin-Yosef was born” in English. Yosef shared the same image and captioned it, “Our baby boy is here.” Friends, family, and even celebrities like Mario Lopez have shared their congratulations via social media. Lopez commented, “Felicidades amigo!” Now, the Martin-Yosef family is a family of six. Here’s the whole story.
Martin started his family as a single father in 2008, after welcoming two twin boys by a surrogate mother.
After Matteo and Valentino were born, Martin took two years off to completely devote himself to raising the children. The twins have always known how they came into the world, though it started with one of them asking Martin if they came from his belly. It was clear from the beginning of Martin and Yosef’s relationship that Yosef was just as obsessed with Matteo and Valentino as Martin was. Yosef has often publicly thanked the twins (on social media and otherwise) for being the light of his life.
Martin and Yosef started dating in April 2016. Five months later, they announced their engagement on the “Ellen Degeneres Show.”
When you know, you know, as they say. Yosef is a painter and artist, and is of Kurdish and Armenian descent, though he maintains citizenship in Syria and Sweden. The lovebirds were married less than two years after they met, in January 2018. By the end of the year (December 31, 2018), they announced the birth of their daughter Lucía Martin-Yosef.
They kept baby Lucía out of the spotlight for the first 7 months of her life, and then, this precious photo graced the Internet.
Earlier this year, Yosef shared this stunning photo of Lucía pondering the meaning of life, while held in Martin’s arms. He captioned the image, “❤️We are beyond happy to announce that we have become parents to a beautiful and healthy baby girl, Lucia Martin-Yosef. It has been a special time for us and we cant wait to see where this stellar baby will take us. Both her beautiful brothers and me and Ricky have fallen in love with Lucia.” Martin captioned his own post of the same image, “La luz de mis ojos,” which means, “the light of my eyes.”
At the Human Rights Campaign awards ceremony last month, Martin also gave a shout-out to Lucía, who stayed home with her grandma, and called her “the light of my life.”
The couple plans to have “many more kids” together.
It’s clear that fatherhood is a vocation for Martin, having taken years off his career to raise the twins by himself, he’s not stepping back from family anytime soon, if ever. Ahead of the 2019 Golden Globes, Martin shared a photo of him “#Multitasking Getting ready for the @goldenglobes,” with baby Lucía. Then, on the carpet, Martin told People, “I want four more pairs of twins. I would love to have a big family, but there’s a lot going on at this moment, a lot of work. It’s a lot going on so we’re going to put things in order first and then we are going to get ready for many more kids.”
Raise your hand if you’re ready to put yourself up for adoption to be part of the Martin-Yosef family. 🙋🏽♀️
