Three months since the debut of the hilarious and well-received “One Day at a Time,” a sitcom on Netflix, producers have given the show a much-praised second season.
“One Day At A Time” gets the green light for another season!
The comedy is based off of the old-school show with the same name that was released in the late ’70s, early ’80s, the main difference is that this contemporary version features a stellar Latino cast. The show’s premise centers around Penelope Alvarez, played by Justina Machado, a Cuban-American nurse, Iraq war Veteran, and single mom raising her two young kids along with her own mother played by Rita Moreno — probably the funniest person on the show.
Oh! And the theme song is sung by the great Gloria Estefan!
The show’s success and acclaimed reviews surely attributed to its second season renewal. But one of the main reasons this show deserves to be on the air is because it truly captures the dynamic and nuances of a modern-day Latino family that gets into real issues without being corny. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 96% approval rating, and that in itself is a pretty big deal.
The cast celebrated the good news about their second season with the cutest video ever.
Since news of the college bribery admissions scandal broke back in March, fans of drama have watched as former “Full House” actress Lori Loughlin fell frame the graces of her fans and daughters. Tabloids have closely kept us abreast on just how much or little contact Loughlin and her daughters in particular have had with eachother enough to make it all seem a bit like a telenovela. That is, a telenovela that prompts all kinds of questions when any main character’s family has a falling out.
And yet, over the weekend, an Instagram post is providing that there’s nothing like a good ‘ol birthday post and a chance to post a cute #Throwback to prove that public disgrace can be fickle.
The embattled Full House actress, also known as Aunt Becky, turned 55 on Sunday and her daughters broke their social media silence to wish their mother a happy birthday.
Since news broke earlier this year that she and her fashion designer husband Mossimo Giannuli were among dozens of parents involved in a college admissions cheating scandal, they’ve been keeping a low profile. Loughlin and Giannuli have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering for allegedly paying up $500,000 to get their daughters into the University of California. Each charge could lead to up to 20 years in prison.
Loughlin’s daughter Olivia Jade took to Instagram to wish Loughlin a happy birthday, captioning the photo, “one day late. happy birthday. i love you so much ❤️”
Jade, who reportedly felt “resentful” toward her parents for their involvement in the college admission scandal, also suffered backlash because of the scandal. The YouTube beauty vlogger and social media influencer not only lost fans and followers, but she also lost many brand partnerships as well. Brands like Sephora and Lulus cut ties with her immediately following the scandal.
Loughlin’s other daughter, Bella Giannulli, also shared a sweet photo of the two and captioned her photo, “happy birthday mama. I love you ❤️”
Looks like Loughlin is getting a lot of birthday lovin’ despite what the headlines have said about her earlier this year.
In fact, even fellow Full House and Fuller Houseco-star Candace Cameron Bure, who’s been supportive of Loughlin during this scandalous time, commented on Bella’s post and wrote, “😘💕😘💕 Happy birthday to your mama!!!!!!!”
Fans and close friends alike have also taken to Twitter to wish Aunt Becky the happiest of birthdays.
“Happy Birthday to my forever friend with a heart of gold. Love you!,” writes Erin Krakow, who starred alongside Loughlin in the Lifetime series When Calls the Heart, in her caption. She shared the same photo on Twitter and the replies were a mix of negative and positive comments–no surprise there, tbh.
Fans on Twitter pointed out that supporting your friends through the good times and the bad times (or the times when you’re caught bribing your kids into college) isn’t “easy, but [it’s] truly important.”
They’re all sweet photos and posts, but they di beg the question of how much time must pass for the court of public opinion to forget its grievances against a problematic person. After all, for her part in the scandal, Loughlin wittingly affected the futures and college education attendance of thousands of college applicants, many of who had never and may never experience even a touch of the privilege her daughters did.
Others responded to the actress asking her to pass on their words of encouragement to Loughlin and sharing that they “miss her terribly.”
“I’m praying for you,” one Twitter fan wrote. Don’t worry guys, she’ll be fine.
A fan shared a sweet post about Loughlin’s impact on her life and how 55 has never looked so good (on that, we can agree on).
“lori you have been my role model for quite some time, most of my life. i grew up watching you and i first fell in love with you and your character aunt becky,” the fan wrote in a series of tweets.
More fans continued to rally behind her good friend Lifetime co-star, calling her a “faithful friend,” and wishing Loughlin the best at 55.
“Wishing Lori the very best in the next year! Missing you!,” @MargieTomaszew2 wrote in her tweet. Damn, fans REALLY miss her.
Another fan advised Loughlin to not let the comments by “haters bring you down.”
“When we are at our lowest we find out who our true friends are. Happy Birthday, Lori!,” she continued in her tweet. Yeah, don’t let comments by the “haters” aka people who actually had to work their way to get into college bring you down, Loughlin.
Again, more fans kept telling Loughlin just how much they missed her on her birthday.
“Happy Birthday Lori. It’s unfair, we miss you so much,” wrote on Twitter fan. Do you know what’s also unfair? Well, you already know what we’re going to say…
Despite the aftermath of the college admissions scandal, Aunt Becky still low-key celebrated her birthday and some fans won’t let her have even that.
I mean, the gif says it all really. The resemblance to Piper is also uncanny.
People reported that on Loughlin’s birthday, the Fuller House actress and her husband “were spotted in Los Angeles on their way to an early morning service at the Church of the Good Sheperd in Beverly Hills.” After the service, Loughlin reportedly hosted an intimate birthday celebration with her husband, daughters, and a few other friends.
Loughlin and her husband are scheduled to next appear in court on August 27.
“One Day at a Time” is back. After strong fan support and a campaign to bring back the acclaimed series, Pop TV has announced that it has picked up the popular series canceled by Netflix earlier this year, for a 13-episode fourth season. According to Vulture, the series is set for a 2020 return and will also air the first three seasons of the show, which will also continue to stream on Netflix.
As well as airing on Pop TV, “One Day at a Time” will run repeats on CBS meaning the show will return to where the original series aired over 40 years ago.
According to Deadline, while some canceled shows have previously been picked up by Netflix, this is the first time a scripted series canceled by the streaming service has found a new home. This is just another example of how transcendent and popular the series has been since it returned back in 2017.
“How amazing it is to be involved with this brilliant and culturally significant series that deals with important themes one minute while making you laugh the next,” Brad Schwartz, Pop TV president, said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more proud to continue telling heartwarming stories of love, inclusion, acceptance, and diversity that pull on your emotions while putting a smile on your face.”
It seemed at some points that the series wasn’t going to make a return but with fan support anything is possible.
When the series was initially canceled back in March, fans and stars of the show were upset. Many credited the show for being one of the lone series with Latino representations on television. Netflix said low viewership numbers were to blame for the canceling but many didn’t buy that.
Fans soon rallied around the show on social media as producers at Sony Television had begun exploring other options for the show. Using the hashtag #SaveODAAT, fans called on a new platform to pick up the critically acclaimed series.
But for the past few months, it was unclear whether the show would ever come back. Today, showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett broke the news on Twitter and it set off a firestorm of excitement through the fandom.
“WE’RE BACK! Thanks to every fan who made #saveodaat trend worldwide, ONE DAY AT A TIME is heading to POP TV & we couldn’t be more excited! We have many more stories to tell about & we can’t wait to share them with you!
Reaction to the series returning has been met with joy and praise across social media.
There is well-deserved reason to celebrate the return of ODAAT. One of them being the show’s inclusiveness and representation of various characters. It was this reason many felt the show deserved a second chance and now it will get an even bigger platform.
“I still can’t believe Netflix canceled One Day At A Time and fucked over Rita Moreno like of all the people you’re gonna cancel a show on, they had to cancel a living legend? And now a random channel came and saved the day? I’d be straight up embarrassed to be Netflix right now,” one user wrote on Twitter.
ODAAT is only going to grow in popularity now and we can thank it’s loyal fans for supporting and campaigning for its return.
While details of the new season are yet to be released, we do know that Season 4 will see the Cuban-American family dealing with new challenges. This includes Elena entering her senior year of high school, Penelope moving up in her medical career and of course, more of Lydia.
We can hardly wait for the new season already. But at this point, we’re all just happy to see this much-needed series find a new home. We think Rita Morena said it perfectly about the show’s return.
“SAVEODAAT is old news…#MoreODAAT is more like it!! Thank you @PopTV #ODAAT @OneDayAtATime we’re backkkk!”
