Olmec And The ‘Legends Of The Hidden Temple’ Is Getting A Reboot And Fans Are Divided On If That’s A Good Thing Or Not

The ’90s television series Legends of the Hidden Temple is coming back with adult contestants. The rebooted series will be released on the mobile-first streaming app Quibi. The Nickelodeon kids’ competition will now only have grown-ups competing as the same six original teams.

Executives know only old people want to watch this. Real kids today are too busy protesting climate change and making Juice WRLD TikToks to care about this. Shout out to all the Green Monkeys out there. Shout out to all the kids in the hood who wanted to go to space camp too. 

The new Legends of the Hidden Temple will be tougher. 

Even though kids are youthful and spry, producers have decided to make millennials do more challenging exercises. In the original series, six teams of two (the Purple Parrots, Red Jaguars, Blue Barracudas, Orange Iguanas, Green Monkeys, and Silver Snakes) competed in three challenges.

The first required a moat crossing race, the second a series of trivia questions, and then a physical challenge through the obstacle course. Each week on the original the obstacles were different, and the team had three minutes to complete it. All of this was filmed in front of a studio audience. Well, the new version is quite different. 

The reboot “will preserve many of the favorite original elements of the show—the Moat Crossing, Olmec and the Temple Run—but will see them ‘grown-up’ for an audience that’s grown up along with them. The entire set will be taken out of the studio, into a jungle and scaled up with tougher challenges and bigger prizes on the line.”

Millennials basically live in the cloaked shadows of dusty office buildings, putting us in the jungle with fresh air might do something crazy like clear our pores. I’m not ready. Call it market research but these people seem to know what’s good for a nostalgia-loving generation of people who sit in front of computers all day.

“I love this beyond all words in the human language that describe affection,” one excited fan said on Twitter

The series’ episodes will run differently on Quibi.

“Bringing back Legends for Quibi is a dream come true. I have been so lucky to be part of this defining millennial show, and now there is a defining millennial platform to go with it. I couldn’t be more excited,” producer Scott Stone, and original co-creator, said in a press release. 

Founder Jeffrey Katzenberg intends for Quibi to be made for a mobile generation. Thus, the episodes of all of the platform’s shows will be 10 minutes or less. Because of all the series are made for mobile devices, two versions of the footage will be produced: one vertical, and one horizontal. 

Quibi will launch next April at $5 a month or $8 for the ad-free version. Quibi is investing quite a bit of money in its projects and has courted notable directors like Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Steven Soderbergh, and Sam Raimi to create series. 

The original Legends of the Hidden Temple only aired three seasons. 

The strange kids competition about the vaguely-Mayan stone god Olmec and the treasures in his temple aired from 1993 to 1995. However, reruns of the show aired on various Nickelodeon properties up until 2015. 

According to writer Chelsea Blackstone the show was basically unwinnable. 

“Apparently, out of the 120-episode run of Legends of the Hidden Temple, only 32 teams ever won. That’s just over a 25% chance of beating the Temple, and those are pretty low odds,” she wrote in Gemr. 

In 1995, one Entertainment Weekly writer compared the series to an American Gladiators knock off for kids.  Legends was considered an American Gladiators meets Indiana Jones pastiche rip off but after decades in syndication, its impact on a generation is clearly lasting. Even the millennials most exhausted from being pandered to with reboots wants in on this. 

“Am I the only one tired of these reboots? Can’t we just remember the shows as they were when we were kids… (With that said, I would still like to be a contestant),” reporter Morgan Parrish said on Twitter. We’re all part of the problem!

Blockbuster Is Opening Up A Limited Time Pop Up Shop And OMG It Is Everything

Media changes are not just technical transformations, but also cultural ones. Just think about the telephone and how it brought new types of connections among people in different geographical locations. But perhapa the biggest change of them all when it comes to the entertainment industry is the shift to digital formats and the phasing out of physical content “containers” such as tapes and CDs. 

You see kids, a long time ago this is what humans used to watch movies on.

These were bulky plastic boxes that played your films and TV shows. This format became standard worldwide even though it was inferior to the competitor Betamax.

And to do so they had to insert those VHS tapes into these machines.

They were pretty tough but once it got old you could hear the very annoying tape tuuuuurning slooowly.

And you had to rewind the tape before returning it to the video rental store.

There was even a penalty fee if you didn’t rewind the tape before returning it!

And a video rental store looked like this.

This was a magical place where you looked for the movies you missed at the cinema or where, if you were a teenager, you wished to score a movie with some mild nudity in it. Come Halloween, the place was swarming with people trying to get the goriest films. 

And the first step of a date night consisted in browsing one of these shelves, so not such thing as Netflix and Chill for 1990s humankind

If you survived choosing a film together then maybe you were meant for each other. There was of course ACTII microwave popcorn at the checkouts! It was a one-stop shop for a date night before Netflix made us browse endlessly. 

And did we mention what TV boxsets looked like? Binge watching actually MADE YOU GET OUT OF THE COUCH! The horror, the horror!

Nothing worse than getting the perfect position on the couch and having to get up to change the tape… only to find out someone put in in the wrong damn box!

Then things got easier and humans got DVDs that didn’t need rewinding

A short push of a button, a big step for humanity. 

But we had to deal with nasty incidents like your DVD being scratched and not working… 

Once the DVD got scratched it would skip scenes or stop working all together! If it was a rental from Blockbuster you better wish the dude at the front desk did not check it before entering into the system, 

So along came other formats like Laser Disc and Blu-ray, but the real game changer was Netflix and its huge streaming catalogue.

So now we could watch it all comfortably! But is more necessarily better?

So Blockbuster stores and other video rental places went kaput.

In 2014 most of the Blockbusters in the world shut down and so an era came to an end. 

And people got lazy…

Can you believe there is actually an Airbnb property specially designed to Netflix and Chill? Come on, where is the fun in that? Yes, be malpensados. 

But some also miss Blockbuster and its rituals so they are opening a Blockbuster pop-up!

Clothes store Dumbgood is opening a pop up shop in New York City for all those nostalgics who probably hate to scan the Netflix catalogue and remember how amazing and definitive it was to exit those blue and yellow shops knowing exactly what you would watch. As The Hollywood Reporter informs us: “Although almost all Blockbusters shuttered by 2014 — today, one lone store in Bend, Oregon remains — clothing label Dumbgood is resurrecting this millennial mainstay in a new, officially licensed streetwear collection.

The line will be available at a Blockbuster pop-up shop in New York, running from Dec. 6 to 15″. Stepping into the SoHo location will be just like going into one of these now ancient stores, as THR continues: “Film posters and white shelves full of cult classic VHS tapes line the space. In addition to fresh popcorn and themed drinks (“No More Late Fees” was a vodka and grapefruit option), the Dec. 5 opening party featured a step-and-repeat with a backdrop made of hundreds of VHS case bindings”. It sounds amazing both in a hipster ironic and X-gen non ironic way!

Clueless Is Getting A Remake And It’s Set To Be A ‘Baby Pink And Bisexual, Tiny Sunglasses-Wearing’ Look At High School

The 90s cult classic ‘Clueless’, is a source of timeless fashion and high school drama, even to this day. The film gave us a style icon and a whole valley-girl inspired vocabulary that is still quotable in 2019 —exhibit A: ‘Ugh, as if!’. And since we’re already knee-high deep in nostalgia, this piece of news will brighten your day: Clueless is getting a reboot and it’s being described as a “baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latte, and Adderall-fueled” look at high school, and omg, we’re totally buggin’.

The 90s classic is being made with a different generation in mind, and there will be no Cher involved.

Remake fever has fallen on Clueless. The 90s classic reimagining of Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’, which is based around Alicia Silverstone as spoiled but well-meaning Beverly Hills posh girl Cher and her high school adventures. The remake though is being made with another generation in mind —Gen Z— and this version will focus, not on the Alaïa-wearing airhead-like Cher Horowitz, but her sassy best friend, Dionne —formerly played by Stacey Dash in the original 1995 film. 

The new Clueless project won’t be a film, but rather a reimagined TV show.

‘Girls Trip’ writer Tracy Oliver is producing, with a script by Marquita Robson, the writer of women’s wrestling Netflix show, GLOW. Oliver made sure that fans were aware that this Clueless project will be a new version of the story, not a continuation of the original film. Additionally, the project is set to be a TV series rather than a new film, written by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey —the writers behind another 90s classic, Will & Grace. 

Bye-Bye Cher, it’s the Dione show now.

Clueless 2.0 could best be described as ‘Mean Girls meets Riverdale meets a Lizzo music video’ according to Deadline. The plot explores what happens when “high school queen bee Cher disappears and her long-life number two, Dionne, steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans.” So there will be no Cher —it’s the Dionne show now.

And, fyi, this wouldn’t be the first Clueless TV series, the first one aired after the film’s success in the late 90s.

The 1995 feature starred by Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy and dreamy Paul Rudd, was written and directed by Amy Heckerling, who also created another Clueless TV show back in the nineties —ICYMI. After the success of the movie in 1995, Paramount Network Television launched a half-hour comedy series, which ran for three seasons from 1996 to 1999. 

The Clueless TV series followed the movie’s premise, recounting Cher’s adventures as a student at Bronson Alcott High in Beverly Hills, CA and her romantic and academic antics. The series starred Rachel Blanchard as Cher, since Silverstone was too busy being Batgirl in 1997. Many of the actors from the movie appeared in the TV series, including Dionne, Mr. Hall, Miss Geist, Amber and Murray.

The movie has been turned into TV shows, books, it’s been referenced in music videos and fashion collections, it even inspired an Off-Broadway musical.

The movie’s legacy has included a TV spinoff that ran three seasons, a series of YA novels, and Iggy Azalea music video that pays homage and the publication of a 20th-anniversary oral history book. Add to that a musical that was in development for more than a decade, with Heckerling writing the script, plus lyrics to around 25 repurposed chart hits from the ‘90s. It was probably too much to hope that this recycled iteration could recapture the original’s amazingness, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when it didn’t. 

The musical opened Off-Broadway at The Pershing Square Signature Center on November of 2018. The show had a very small run until January of this year. Clueless, The Musical, received mixed reviews. Frank Rizzo of Variety called the narrative “lightweight” but praised the overall look. He praised the design, costumes, and choreography as well. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter found the show “hit-or-miss”. Rooney praised that the show stuck closely to the original’s plot but criticized that there was no element of surprise. Rooney wrote that “in comparison to other teen classics retooled for the stage, like Mean Girls, Heathers: The Musical or Bring It On, the show rarely steps out from the shadow of its screen source with anything new to offer.” So the production closed down after a very shortly lived run. 

It was about time a young black woman was given the protagonist role of a teen series.

In an interview in June, Oliver spoke to Vulture about the remake, noting that this story would be a “reimagining” of the film, focusing on a “2019 or a 2020 version of a group of teens that would be the Clueless for this generation.” Whatever happens, we’re excited to see a young black woman take the wheel of a teen mystery series. It’s a rare thing and it was about time. Hopefully, this reimagining of the 90s classic does better than the musical rendition did.
