The crime that shocked the country, and Beverly Hills, is finally getting a true crime show.
Dick Wolf has long held your attention with “Law & Order: SVU” and now he’s created what some are calling his very own version of “American Crime Story.” The first season of Wolf’s true crime series, “Law & Order True Crime,” will focus on one of the most prolific crimes to rock the country: the Menendez Murders. The trailer for the new show has just been released and it looks like it is going to be an intense and gripping show.
The murders took place in 1989, when Cuban-American brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez shot their mother and father with shotguns in their Beverly Hills mansion. The case garnered a lot of media attention as people grappled to understand how two seemingly well-off sons would murder their parents. At first, it looked like a tragic tale of a mob-style hit — the brothers made the initial 911 call to let police know that someone had shot their parents. Police didn’t suspect the brothers at first, but it wasn’t long until the brothers went on a multi-million dollar shopping spree that eventually made officials suspicious.
However, it wasn’t an open and shut case: the brothers accused their father of sexual abuse, according to an ABC special that aired earlier this year, and it took two trials before the brothers were ultimately convicted of the murder.
“Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders” promises to dive into the story and bring to light what went down before and during this chaotic and tragic crime. As for the casting, only one name has been confirmed: Edie Falco as defense attorney Leslie Abramson.
There has been plenty of reaction on social media. Some people are not feeling it…
Lifetime is also planning their own original movie based on the crime with Courtney Love as the mother, Kitty Menendez.
Others had their interest piqued.
We’ll just have to see how people respond to the series after it starts.
