“I thought I just discovered the coolest drum beat in the world… all of a sudden I realize every Justin Bieber song has it…”

It’s always interesting when someone “discovers” something about your culture that you’ve known about damn well all your life. If it’s not a chopped cheese sandwich, mofongitos or even the entire concept of NYC bodegas, it’s our music. Well, this interview with Foo Fighters frontman and ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl reveals that he happened to stumble upon reggaeton when working on the Foo Fighters song “Run.”

According to the interview above, he thought following his high-energy guitar riff with a quick drum beat created a cool sound that he’d never heard before. A music producer pointed out, “Oh, you’ve brought us a Reggaeton beat,” to which he replied, “What’s reggaeton?”

Then Grohl exclaimed, “Every fuckin’ Justin Beiber song has it… I was like, ‘Oh no.'” Although I shook my head to that, it’s not entirely wrong, as The Beibs has indeed co-opted the sound time and time again. Seems like a theme here…

Here’s the song below. The “reggaeton” beat starts around one minute mark:

I doubt anyone’s going to get a perreo in while jamming to this at the club. Not exactly “Despacito,” but I hear it. Good luck un-hearing it.

Azealia Banks Came For Cardi B On Twitter, Calling Her A ‘Poor Man’s Nicki,’ But Cardi’s Clap Back Was Perfect

Cardi B is living her best life, especially this week, and it’s only Wednesday. She’s topping charts, performing on television, and getting shout outs from the biggest names in music. She’s establishing herself as more than a one hit wonder by dropping a dope feature. She’s doing shows all over with fans shouting her lyrics from the tops of their lungs.

What could possibly go wrong? Who could possibly say a negative thing about this success story? Well…

On Sunday, the Bronx-born rap star was ending a run of Florida shows in Miami…

By Monday, she had flown to Atlantic Record’s New York offices to pick up her platinum plaque for “Bodak Yellow.”

It was also the same day that “Bodak Yellow” was announced as the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

She made history as only the second female rapper (with no guest performers) to get to the top since Lauryn Hill in 1998, and also became the first person of Dominican descent to ever get to #1 by herself.

On top of that, Atlantic’s meeting to give her a plaque was just a cover for her surprise party with her closest friends and family.

She then got to perform on late night television for the first time ever.

She got to perform her amazing feature on G-Eazy’s song “No Limit,” where she easily out raps him, and then on stage, out danced him.

Missy Elliot, whose album Cardi B says was the first she ever bought, shouted her out on social media.

Even Nicki Minaj, the reigning unofficial Queen of Rap, threw some love at Cardi B, congratulating her as a fellow “New Yawka.”

Just an amazing couple of days. And it seemed like nothing could go wrong for Cardi B ever again. Until…

Yup, you guessed it Azealia Banks, who is a dope musician in her own right, albeit controversial, came for Cardi B.

Banks, whose official Twitter was suspended, has been tweeting from an unofficial account using the name @XoCheapy.

Banks is no stranger to spats with other celebrities, having had run-ins with Russel Crowe and Zayn Malik recently.

Banks had strong feelings about Cardi B.

Although she said she wasn’t playing respectability politics, she sounded a lot like someone spitting about respectability politics.

She then went for the jugular so you’d know for sure who she was talking about.

Bath tub grout injections… harsh.

She then dropped the mic, finally calling Cardi B a “poor man’s Nicki.”

It’s not hip-hop without a little beef.

Cardi, being no stranger to beef or social media, dropped the slickest clap back yet.

Cardi posted a video of Azealia Banks enthusiastically singing along to “Bodak Yellow.” If the line “One of the reasons Bodak Yellow went #1! Cuz even the HATERS love it!” isn’t an example of Cardi B’s intelligence, I don’t know what is.

Let’s hope they keep it on wax and it stays a healthy competition between the two NYC talents.
