When Cardi B said she would be taking time off to focus on her pregnancy, we really thought we wouldn’t see her again until she had her baby. But Cardi B isn’t just kicking up her feet waiting for her baby girl to pop out. The superstar rapper is still out there making appearances for VIPs only. We just saw her take the stage with her baby daddy at the Hot 107.9 Birthday Bash in Atlanta. Now we’re seeing her on the TV screen unlike we’ve ever seen her before.
Cardi B joined Jerry Seinfeld and Zach Galifianakis for a bit of comedy ala Cardi B.
We know she’s hilarious on her own. It is one of the many things that we love about her. But, who knew that she could do scripted comedy?
Galifianakis was filming an interview with Jerry Seinfeld, which went off the rails pretty quickly.
The whole concept of “Between Two Ferns” is based on the fact that Galifianakis totally disrespects his guests. It sounds weird, but it’s funny and very 2018, right?
While the interview between Seinfeld and Galifianakis goes down hill, Cardi B changed everything.
The rapper looks like she is ready to go into labor, and is stylish AF. She sits down between the comedians and isn’t at all intimidated. Even Seinfeld is surprised to see Cardi right in front of him.
“You are special, but the most important thing is that you’re relevant,” Galifianakis tells Cardi B as a dig to Seinfeld.
Galifianakis even got Cardi B a present for her baby.
Cardi B is once again in hot water after she publicly let her temper get the better of her. The 26-year-old Grammy-winner took to Instagram live to vent her frustration at a story that was written about her that she felt “twisted her words”. While on a press tour for her new Netflix* show “Rhythm and Flow”, Cardi B was asked a question by Access Hollywood as to how she achieves work/life balance as a new mom. Cardi responded with an in-depth, two-minute answer where she described the ways she puts her child before her work.
However, Access Hollywood ran the story with the headline: “Cardi B Admits Baby Kulture Calls Someone Else ‘Mommy” Because She Works So Much.”
Cardi B responded to the “clickbait” headline in a fiery, expletive-filled Instagram Live video. In the video, she not only took issue with Access Hollywood using her daughter to generate views but the way in which the media outlet edited her response to change what she said. “That’s not what the fuck I said,” she yelled at the camera. “Don’t use my motherfucking kid for clickbait bitch. Don’t fucking cut shit off, try to make me look like I’m a fuck-ass mom ‘cause that’s something that I’m not.” But, as her tirade continued, she crossed a line for many people.
At one point in the video, she said: “Access Hollywood, suck my whole dick. Suck a dick, I hope your fucking mom catch AIDs, bitch.”
While some people were sympathetic to Cardi’s anger at the media peddling an inaccurate image of her mothering skills, countless others were disappointed in her choice of words–mainly her decision to use catching HIV/AIDS as a “curse” on her enemies. People were quick to call out Cardi’s insults as crass and below-the-belt. LGBT and HIV/AIDS activists have long worked towards erasing the stigma surrounding the STI, and critics are saying that “weaponizing” the disease in this particular way is problematic.
“Cardi couldn’t come up with a better insult than wishing AIDS on people?!” said Twitter user @EnigmaticLone. “Contributing to the stigma of AIDS is gross and irresponsible”. Others accused Cardi of only aligning herself with the LGBTQ community when it benefited her: “[Cardi B] claims to be a ‘ally’ to lgbt ppl while wishing AIDS on ppl she doesn’t like,” said Twitter user @Gaynerdman.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Cardi B has gotten into trouble over her problematic behavior.
After the most recent influx of bad press and negative fan reactions, Cardi went back on social media to explain herself a bit more. “I go out I do press run people took my kindness for weakness,” she said via Twitter. “I felt violated I said how I felt now I am THE INDUSTRY WICKED WITCH AGAIN.” She then claimed she would shortly be taking a break from social media because she is “over it”.
Naturally, the reaction on Twitter has been swift and immediate.
While a lot of people understand Cardi’s anger at her words being manipulated, the majority of her fans don’t condone how she went about expressing it.
Some fans expressed their support but still asked for an apology.
Cardi has been the first to admit that she comes from “a place that people have closed mindsets”, and she isn’t always educated on the baggage that certain language comes with. Still, ignorance can’t always be an excuse for bad behavior.
This fan is still on Cardi’s side regardless of her problematic words:
Cardi responded to this stan’s Tweet with: “Thank you…Boy they will push every type of narrative to cancel me NOBODY CANT CANCEL ME BUT GOD…”.
This fan believes that Cardi B should choose to rise above negative press.
The truth is, this won’t be the last time the press takes Cardi’s words and twists them around. If she wants to stay in the spotlight, it might benefit her to either get a thicker skin, or avoid reading articles about herself. Celebrities have always been the targets of negative press.
This Twitter user seems to be 100% fed up with Cardi’s history of problematic statements:
At this point, it does seem rather likely that Cardi B might continue to say hurtful things about marginalized communities.
“Saturday Night Live” doesn’t have a good track record when it comes to people of color, specifically Latinos. In the show’s iconic history, which spans 44 years, the cast has mostly been white and male. In 2016, they finally hired a Latina to join the cast, which was a year after “SNL” decided to have Donald Trump host the show when he was running for president and calling Mexicans “rapists and criminals.” Latinos boycotted the show and they did receive backlash for allowing him to host. Yet, still “SNL” has yet to learn the importance of Latino representation and inclusion.
On the season 45 premiere, “SNL” did a sketch that featured the Democratic presidential candidates but did not include Julián Castro and did include Marianne Williamson, who’s not in the running anymore.
So why didn’t the have someone impersonating Castro? We know they don’t have any Latino comics on the show, however, they could have had their sole Latina comic Melissa Villaseñor put on a wig. She has played a man before. The sketch did include special guest stars including Maya Rudolf (who played Kamala Harris), and Larry David (who played Bernie Sanders). Could they have not asked former Latino “SNL” comics Fred Armisen or Horatio Sanz to play Castro?
“Interesting that @nbcsnl decided to cut one candidate out of this sketch. Could you not find a Latino actor to play @JulianCastro?” Sawyer Hackett, national press secretary for Castro’s campaign, tweeted.
People on social media were livid at the exclusion of Castro and once again their dismissive attitude toward Latinos.
Was it too difficult for “SNL” to add one more actor to the stage, especially one that is still in the running — unlike Williamson? Lin-Manuel Miranda and his dad said they would have both stepped up to the plate to play the role of Castro.
It’s as if “SNL” continues to make the wound even deeper by excluding the only Latino candidate.
“SNL” knows very well that representation matters, so there’s no excuse for this exclusion. Are they doing this on purpose?
Maybe they think Castro’s persona isn’t funny enough to include in a parody?
If “SNL” has talented writers they could have surely written something hilarious for an actor portraying Castro. We already have staggering facts that show film and TV excludes Latinos in overwhelming statistics, so you would think “SNL” (and all programming for that matter) would want to rectify that. Maybe they just don’t care?
“SNL” has a long history of dissing Latinos, so this just makes it worse.
Latino viewers and talent have been asking for more representation for several seasons now. There was celebration from fans when Melissa Villseñor was brought on in 2016.
Many people see their omission of Castro as the show disregarding Latinos.
This overt move by “SNL” actually made the skit not very funny but cringeworthy. The erasure of the only Latino running for the presidency was glaring.
You know “SNL” messed up bad when Latina moms get involved.
If you make Latina moms mad, asking for their forgiveness won’t be easy to do. Trust us. We have all been there. However, when you really try to make things up to them, they will accept it.
Since “SNL” screwed up the premiere, will they correct their huge mistake by the next episode?
There’s another debate coming up very soon, and if “SNL” is going to stay relevant in the political comedy stage they better include Castro or they will risk not only alienating a core audience but also looking like they can’t handle diverse comedy.
And, if “SNL” can’t find anyone to play Castro, there’s one person that will be happy to do it.
Julian’s twin brother, Joaquin Castro — who’s pretty busy right now working on Capitol Hill himself — said he could step in and portray him on the show. We think he’d do a fabulous job because he clearly knows him best right?
Either way, “SNL” needs to get their act together. There’s no reason to exclude a strong candidate for president only to be replaced by a white woman who isn’t running for president anymore. It’s an obvious omission that “SNL” needs to stop.
