Here’s How Aubrey Plaza Went From A Prankster In High School To A Major Actress In Hollywood

We all know one thing about Aubrey Plaza: she’s funny and we want to see more of her. Made famous by NBC’s Parks and Recreation, she’s gone on to produce and star in her own big screen films, continues to prank anyone, and has even come out as bisexual in the last couple years.

You’ll be shocked to learn what health conditions and obstacles she’s overcome, all while cackling. Prepare yourself, because you’re about to love Aubrey Plaza even more than you already do.

She was named after a song by the band Bread.

It’s called “Aubrey” and this is how the song starts out:

“And Aubrey was her name,
A not so very ordinary girl or name
But who’s to blame?”

Talk about manifest destiny, right?

She’s a 34-year old Cancer.

Born on June 26, 1984, Cancer’s are known for being extremely sensible, stable and moody. She’s like the Dark Lord of Cancers.

She’s half Puerto Rican and half Irish.

Her father, David Plaza, brings the Puerto Rican side of her. He’s a financial advisor and her mother is an attorney. The apple falls far from the pear tree I guess.

She felt out of place in her hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

She told Latina, “I was like the only diverse kid in my high school, and I’m half-Puerto Rican. But yeah, I have a huge family and tons of cousins in Puerto Rico.”

Sometimes, she even feels out of place in her own Latinidad…

She went on to tell Latina, “I wish my grandfather had taught my Dad Spanish when he was younger so he could’ve taught me when I was younger, and sometimes he does, too. It’s a shame.”

So relatable, Aubrey. So many of our parents had the drive to assimilate us for success, but we’re creating a new culture, vale?

Aubrey used to work in a video store.

Apparently, her and Jimmy Fallon had that in common in their high school years. Yeah, that sounds super awkward, RIP Blockbuster.

She was *the* class clown in high school…and student council president.

One day, she followed her principal home after school and used a giant box with a bow on it as her mask. Every time he turned around, she’d just duck under the box. Like a cardboard box was actually following him. 😂

She even organized a Mustache Day.

With great power comes great pranks, as they say. Of course, she also used her power to orchestrate a school-wide mock sword fight. Are you not yet in love?

She went to an all-girls Catholic school.

Yup. That was the setting for all her pranks. She told Delaware Today in 2012, “I was always interested in rocking the boat and making people laugh and doing weird things. I think a Catholic all-girls school is a good setting for that.”

She went to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

That place is a breeding ground for all our favorite stars, including Camila Mendes, Gina Rodriguez, Alexis Bledel y más. She always knew she wouldn’t follow in her parents’ footsteps.

She had a stroke when she was 22 years old.

Ten years later amidst all her newfound fame, she told The Guardian, “I had expressive aphasia, where I could understand what’s happening, but I couldn’t talk or communicate. Like, you could say something and I would know what you meant but I couldn’t express it or even write it. That was the weirdest part. When they gave me a piece of paper and a pen I just kept writing lines instead of words. But at least I could walk. When it first happened to me I was paralyzed, but I was so young that my brain healed itself really fast. I was really lucky in that way.”

She stole the NBC page uniform after being quasi-fired.

She told Elle Magazine, “I stole this NBC page uniform after I was encouraged to leave the Page Program. I wasn’t outright fired, but it was suggested that I leave, so I never gave it back. I wasn’t used to working in a corporate environment like NBC where there are HR rules. It’s fuzzy to me exactly what happened, but I think I made a joke about Jesus being crucified or I wrote it on a wall, and I got in trouble. Three or four months after I started, they were like, ‘Maybe this isn’t right for you,’ and I was like, ‘Maybe it isn’t.'”

She told Elle, “After working as a page, I got a gig as a low-level intern within the casting department at NBC in the 30 Rock building. During the first season of 30 Rock, they needed a page character in the background for one of the shots. I said, “I can do it. I’ll put on my uniform and pretend to give the spiel I would actually give.” I did it. My stolen uniform and I made it on to the first season of 30 Rock.”

Parks and Recreation cast Aubrey Plaza without even having a role for her.

Caption: “TIL the casting director for “Parks and Recreation” called Michael Schur and said, “I just met the weirdest girl I’ve ever met in my life.” He met with her and she made him feel very uncomfortable for about an hour. Aubrey Plaza was cast as April.”

She’s a witch.

CREDIT: @AO_THELEGEND / Twitter

Ok, well, she’s witchy. She told Big World Tale, “I love Halloween so much, but I have a very strict policy that I’ve never worn a sexy Halloween costume because I believe that you should be scary on Halloween. I basically just do some kind of version of a Nautical Sea Witch. I throw a fishing net on myself, and I have a wig and some makeup. I just like dressing up like a witch, like a Sea Hag kind of character.”

She gifted vials of blood and hair to the Parks and Rec cast.

Right before the whole show was about to wrap, Plaza was feeling sentimental and gave every single person a vial filled with blood, toenails, and hair. Okay, so the blood was actually just old jelly in her fridge but nobody has confirmed where the hair and toenails came from. 👹

Her and Nick Offerman share the same birthday.

While Nick Offerman shares posts of him and his wife with captions like, “All my birthday dreams coming true,” Aubrey is out here posting this. Last year, she captioned this one: “haggy birthday to me and my dark lord @nickofferman who i shall obey until the murky waters swallow me once and for all.” lol, k.

She’s produced and starred in two of her own movies, including The Little Hours.

The movie is written and directed by her longtime boyfriend Jeff Baena, and was initially released at the 2017 Sundance festival. The movie is about several mentally unstable nuns in the countryside, who hang out with a coven of witches, have some solid lesbian sex, and get a little high.

Aubrey Plaza is giving us recovering Catholics what we need.

Her first kiss tasted like metal.

She tells Big World Tale, “I was in seventh grade. I’m not going to say his name, but I went to an all-girls school, and there was a boy at the brother school who was placed in a juvenile correction facility for taping a screwdriver to his foot and kicking people with it. I believe he was my first kiss, and I remember that it tasted like metal.”

She came out as bisexual in 2016.

In an interview with The Advocate, who acknowledged her popularity with the LGBTQ community, she casually confirmed her sexuality.

“Oh, yeah. I don’t mind. I know I have an androgynous thing going on and there’s something masculine about my energy. Girls are into me – that’s no secret. Hey, I’m into them too. I fall in love with girls and guys. I can’t help it,” she said.

Today, she’s worth about $3 million, wepa.

From playing the voice of Grumpy Cat in Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever, to running her own productions, and starring alongside Anna Kendrick in feature films, we’d say Aubrey Plaza is doing well for herself. Just keep pranking everyone, okay? We worship you, dark hag.

A Fan Asked Eva Mendes Why She Hasn’t Acted In Years And She Says It’s Because She Isn’t Settling For Any Role

This year’s Golden Globes awards were a complete letdown for a variety of reasons. Aside from the typical #SoWhite nonsense and long speeches, people were astonished at the lack of Latinas on the red carpet. We counted four: Jennifer Lopez, Ana de Armas, Sofia Vergara, and Salma Hayek. Depressing right? We know there are more Latinas in Hollywood, but where are they? At least one of the most recognized Latina actresses is explaining why she hasn’t acted in years.

A fan recently asked Eva Mendes on Instagram when she’ll be in a new movie. Mendes responded by saying she won’t settle for any project partly because of her daughters.

On Jan. 7, Mendes responded to a fan on Instagram when she asked her,  “When the fans going to see u in some new movies?” Mendes told her kindly that she isn’t offered roles that are good enough for her.

“Hi! When there’s something worthwhile to be a part of,” she wrote on Instagram. “As a mother now, there are many roles I won’t do. There are many subject matters that I don’t want to be involved with, so it limits my choices, and I’m fine with that. I have to set an example for my girls now. But no worry, I got some side hustles. Ha! Thanks for asking. All the best for 2020.”

Mendes’s most recent role was the 2014 film Lost River directed and written by her baby daddy, Ryan Gosling. Things certainly changed for Mendes when she met Gosling in 2011.

The two first met while filming the 2012 movie, “The Place Beyond the Pines.” There was no denying the chemistry between the two in “The Place Beyond the Pines.” It was an extraordinary film about a Luke (Gosling) who doubles as a bank robber and motorcyclist. He meets Romina (Mendes), the two fall in love, and have a baby. Domestic life isn’t for Luke, and he cannot escape his crime-ridden life. We won’t give any spoilers, but it truly felt like we were witnessing a real-life love story.

Mendes is now the mother of two girls and has gone on to launch her fashion collection with New York & Company and has been busy with that for several years now.

While Mendes continues to lead a pretty private life with Gosling and her daughters, her fashion collection has been successful. She has also said that her partner has been very encouraging and proud of her work as a designer.

“Ryan is incredibly supportive, and he’s always in awe,” Mendes told People magazine last year. “He makes me realize that [making the collection] is actually a lot of work. I have so much fun doing it that I don’t really realize.”

She also added that her in-laws and her family are extremely helpful to her as she develops each collection.

“Ryan’s mom, Ryan’s sister, my mom, my sisters, my grandma are all my fashion guinea pigs,” Mendes told the magazine. “Nobody is going to be more honest than family, and our family is very honest. It’s something I really appreciate because when designing something, you need real feedback.”

Yet, still, with her success as a fashion designer, we cannot help miss Mendes as an actor. Remember her in “Training Day”?

Her role as Sara opposite Denzel Washington was so intense and incredibly raw. We can see why she would hesitate to be in certain kinds of characters, especially if the part calls for nudity or vulgar language. The role of Sara is also one that we have seen often, which is the stereotypical Latina as a single mother, living in the projects. That has been played out. That movie, however, was how we first learned of Mendes.

She stretched her comedy chops in “The Other Guys” in 2010 alongside Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell.

That movie was hilarious, and she was amusing as the wife of Will Ferrell. Then again, that role was of a sexy (but smart) Latina who could whip of a home-cooked meal and be stunning all at the same time. Mendes can play the ultimate woman because she is a lot of ways. However, we understand she wants to break away from that notion that all Latinas are curvy, sexy, and feisty.

Her Instagram is always active, so it makes us feel like Mendes hasn’t gone anywhere.

But we still miss you on the big screen, Eva. Come back!!

Amazon Studios Pens Major Deal With Diego Luna And Gael Garcia Bernal’s Production Company

Celebrity BFFs share a special place in the collective consciousness of fans and admirers alike. Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal are no exception. While the pair once shared the “child actor” title, the two broke free of that category in their breakthrough roles in “Y Tu Mamá También.” Ever since then, the Diego Luna-and-Gael Garcia Bernal radar has remained on alert. We are happy to alert that this cute duo is working together once again.

Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal signed a deal Amazon Studios to create and produce content that will premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

The incredible deal means their Mexico-based production company La Corriente del Golfo, will initiate projects in Latin America.

“We are incredibly excited to expand Amazon Studios’ relationship with the multitalented team of Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna,” said Vernon Sanders, Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios, according to Deadline. “Their talent, creativity, and global perspective will undoubtedly result in even more compelling content for our Amazon Prime Video customers.”

The guys are equally excited about their new venture with the high-profile company.

“We are delighted and grateful at La Corriente del Golfo for our first-look deal with Amazon Studios,” Garcia Bernal said, according to Deadline. “This provides an opportunity for us and for talent in Latin America to create ambitious and interesting projects.”

Luna added: “This is an important moment for everyone at La Corriente del Golfo. We are very excited to work hand in hand with Amazon, as this will allow us to reach new audiences and to tell stories that represent us and reflect our realities.”

This is not the first time Garcia Bernal and Luna have worked together producing projects. In 2005, they launched Canana Films but left it in 2018.

Credit: @CANANApresenta / Twitter

The Mexican production company produced at least 20 projects both for film and TV, including their 2008 film “Rudo y Cursi” and “César Chávez” starring Michael Peña in 2014. In 2019, they released Netlfix’s “Luis Miguel La Serie” and their last film “Miss Bala” starring Gina Rodriguez.

In 2018, Luna and Garcia Bernal said they would stop producing under Canana Films to work on other projects. At the time of the announcement, we could not help but wonder if there was a rift between the two. Why would they stop working together? Did they break up! Now we know it was to start a new venture — together!

“Canana arose out of the strength that fraternity gives us when we express ourselves freely,” Garcia Bernal said in 2018, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “That will continue to be the slogan for every project we embark on. As in every cycle that ends, now another begins.”

Soon after they split with Canana Films, the guys announced they would launch their own production company called La Corriente del Golfo, which translates to Gulfstream in English. Here’s how Garcia Bernal explained the name of his new company, “La Corriente del Golfo is an ocean current that originates in the Gulf of Mexico and travels all the way to the North Atlantic, allowing for a temperate climate – and, without which, there’d be Arctic tundra,” Garcia Bernal said according to Variety, adding: “We take up the symbol of this global current to emphasize that liberty – in all its meanings –should flow as freely as an ocean current.” He is so poetic!

We love seeing working together in this kind of capacity, which will undoubtedly give more opportunity to Latinx actors. But these two have garnered success separately in their right.

Credit: @el_universal_mx / Twitter

Ever since their critical acclaim in 2001 with “Y Tu Mamá También,” these talented actors have been working nonstop in both film and TV. Most recently, Garcia Bernal was nominated for Best Actor Golden Globe in 2017 for his role in Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle,” and in 2016, he won.

Luna has also had a lot of success with roles in the 2016 film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and Netflix’s “Narcos: Mexico.” The new second season of “Narcos: Mexico” will soon be on Netflix, and we cannot wait.

With so much growth between these two (sorry, pun intended), we cannot help but look back at how far these two have come. Let’s take a look.

Cheers to these Mexican cuties, and congrats on the new deal! We’re excited to see their latest projects.
