Ally Brooke Scored Two Perfect Scores In One Night On DWTS Landing Her On Track For The Semi-Finals

The competition is getting stiff on “Dancing With The Stars.” The season 28 cast has dwindled to a small group as they make their way to the semi-finals. We’ve already seen plenty of them get cut from the show, including  Kate Flannery from “The Office,” Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown, model and famous daughter Sailor Brinkley-Cook, former NBA player Lamar Odom, and Supremes singer Mary Wilson. This week’s episode saw another cut (and some people were thrilled about it) during their “Boy Band & Girl Group Night” theme. The couples had to perform dance routines to songs made famous by girl groups and boy bands and controversial cast member Sean Spicer finally got the boot.

This week, former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was finally eliminated.

Critics of Spicer swore he’d never make it past the first episode. After all, who would vote for a man that lied continuously during their time in the White House?  A lot of people, actually. Spicer made it all the way to week 9. Even President Donald Trump thought he had a sure shot of winning again this week. The president first tweeted, “Vote for Sean Spicer on Dancing with the Stars. He is a great and very loyal guy who is working very hard. He is in the quarterfinals — all the way with Sean! #MAGA #KAG.” But when Spicer got the ax, Trump deleted that tweet and revised it to: “A great try by @seanspicer. We are all proud of you!” Spicer responded to him by tweeting, “Thank you @POTUS @realDonaldTrump I can’t begin to express how much your continued support has meant, especially during my time on @DancingABC.”

Ally Brooke scored perfect tens all night. Now she’s going to the semi-finals.

Since the theme last night was girl groups and boy bands, you would think the former Fifth Harmony member would have danced to one of her own songs. Then again, that would probably be considered cheating or something. She and dance partner Sasha Farber danced to Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” and New Kids on the Block “Step by Step,” which she danced to phenomenally. The judges thought so too. They gave her perfect 10s all night. “Making our way to the semi freaking finals…Step by Step! Two dances & two perfect scores? I will never forget tonight’s show! 

This is not the first time Ally and her partner have scored perfect scores. They brilliantly scored the same last week.

People think their natural talent and skills is going to take them all the way to the end. However, just because the judges give perfect scores doesn’t mean the people will vote for you. Brooke learned that lesson last week. She tweeted, “So many mixed emotions tonight. I’m elated yet disappointed because I landed in the bottom two even after receiving the first perfect score of the season. All I know is this. I’ve given this my all and I’m so thankful for my fans voting each and every week.”

Here’s Ally’s second performance of the night, which she rocked.

For anyone thinking that Brooke has a leg up on everyone else because she comes from a dancing background, you should remember these are hard dances to learn. They have a lot of technicalities. Her partner Sasha tweeted, “Samba is the hardest dance to teach out of all the dances, as it requires a very unique technique and a specific knee bounce! Watching this back we worked hours and hours on just that. I’m so proud of you!!! Thank u in believing.”

Just to be fair, here’s Sean’s last performance as a contestant on the show.

Spicer told People magazine that he was relieved to have been voted out. Oh sure, Sean, change the narrative, he’s kind of a pro at spinning stories. 

“There’s been a tremendous amount of support that’s kept me out of the bottom two the last nine weeks and I’ve truly been humbled by how many people have taken time out of their Monday nights to keep me going,” Spicer told said to the magazine. “I will look back on this as an amazing experience.”

Now that he’s gone, the remaining group includes Ally Brooke, the “Bachelorette” star Hannah Brown, actor and comedian Kel Mitchell, country singer Lauren Alaina, and “Dawson’s Creek” star James Van Der Beek.

The Evolution Of Reggaeton In The 2010s: From ‘Despacito’ To ‘Te Bote’, This Is How Latinx Music Turned Into A Global Phenomenon

Reggaeton has infected the whole world with dembow, signaling a whole era of Latinx representation in mainstream culture. The infectious Latin Caribbean’s particular take on dancehall reggae has become a global movement that artists from all over the world want a part in. During this decade reggaeton has galloped into the Anglo-world, its flow has been Americanized, Europeanized, watered-down, dressed-up and recomposed to fit a thousand new contexts. So let’s look back on the last ten years to see how the genre has changed and what has become of the rhythm we all love. 

The decade started with a heavy EDM influence, case in point, Juan Magan’s 2011 album ‘Bailando Por Ahi’ or Don Omar’s hit, ‘Hasta que salga el Sol’.

The rhythm made inroads into the more frequently foursquare sound of EDM. The early 2010s were an EDM boom, a movement that established pulsating, treble-soaked electronic dance as not only the dominant form of crowd-pleasing live music, but the contemporary lingua franca for all of pop, and the default mode of the Top 40 back in the day. So it’s no surprise that reggaeton took in some of that influence to produce ‘Electrolatino’, music. The vivacious melodic reggaeton mixed with hard-hitting electronic beats saw its highest moment in 2015 with Bomba Estereo’s ‘Fiesta’ —the song even brought Will Smith out of a decade-long music hiatus when he reached out to the band to lend his voice for a remix.

Fast forward to 2017 and Daddy Yankee is featured on Luis Fonsi’s chart-busting hit, Despacito, making way for another reggaeton revolution.

By2018, the song’s unprecedented commercial success had even garnered Fonsi Guinness World Records recognition: it spent 16 weeks at No. 1 in the Billboard charts (a feat only topped by Old Town Road). It became the most-streamed song worldwide and was the first YouTube video to hit five billion views. And that was only the beginning.

Reggaeton’s latest commercial iterations rely heavily on trap and pop, harnessed by chart-topping artists like J Balvin, Ozuna and Arcangel.

 It’s upped the dancehall quotient at times, and dialled it down, incorporated more or less of its fundamental rhythm, dembow, and even spawned surprise mutations, like when Bad Bunny’s Tenemos Que Hablar folded in touches of pop-punk.

Halfway through the 2010s, Latin Trap, began to gain notoriety.

The less dominant wing of Spanish-language hip hip began to surge as a response to developments in American rap, it embraced the slow-rolling rhythms and gooey vocal delivery of Southern hip-hop. 

Now a variety of artists associated with the movement are riding high.

Five of the Top 30 music videos on YouTube’s chart of 2017 involved artists associated with Latin trap – Bad Bunny, Chris Jeday, Karol G. Bad Bunny, the sound’s best-known proponent, also appeared three times in the Top 25 of Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart on the same year. “It goes beyond trap: the music we call ‘Latin urban’ is now diversifying into many different forms,” Horacio Rodriguez, VP of Marketing for Universal Music Latino, said to Rolling Stone magazine. “It’s popping in the streets right now with zero radio airplay. It’s a counter-culture of young kids listening to this music.”

Older stars stampeded to endorse the latest style, boosting its mainstream exposure.

The Colombian superstar J Balvin’s Energia album contained songs like “35 Pa Las 12,” a booming, American-rap-radio-ready collaboration with the Dominican singer/rapper Fuego. Farruko’s record dropped around the same time was titled TrapXFicante. Maluma, a supple pop-reggaeton heartthrob, anchored the hook of the Trap Capos single “Cuatro Babys,” which skyrocketed him to fame. 

Bad Bunny, the undisputed champion of Latin trap, sings and raps with an unhurried, conversational tone.

The video to San Benito’s hit “Soy Peor” now has 703 million views. He can do a song with Drake, he can do a song with Travis scott, he’s the guy who’s taken ‘Latin Trap’ mainstream. His music is a rich tapestry of trap, reggaeton and bachata. He can feature Ricky Martin on a self-love anthem, and with Solo de Mi, Bad Bunny fortified the song’s affecting lyrics with a message of solidarity with domestic abuse survivors in its music video. Most notably, though, his work is praised for its unabashed emotional vulnerability and, paired with Bad Bunny’s meticulous manicures and eccentric, neon-hued fashion sense, he’s presented male reggaetoneros in a different light altogether. 

Reggaeton and Urbano are, in some corners, also running parallel to the #MeToo movement.

Artists like Natti Natasha, Karol G and Becky G are flipping the genre’s overt male-narrated sexuality to the female POV, reclaiming agency with each beat.

The various styles that encompass música urbana —hip-hop, reggaetón, dembow, and champeta, to name a few— have reached a critical mass in the Americas.

Música urbana is American music. The loosely defined term encapsulates Spanish-language “urban” music with roots in the culture of descendants of enslaved peoples across North, South, and Central America. Toward the end of the decade, the genre became a worldwide sound, an art recognized by some of pop’s biggest stars. From Drake, to Beyonce and Cardi B, all have acknowledged the power and the audience of ‘urbano’. 

Language is no longer a barrier for its mainstream consumption. 

Any discussion of música urbana in 2019 inevitably begins with it’s biggest stars, the holy trinity atop the YouTube charts: J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and Ozuna. They were the three most-streamed artists in the world on YouTube in 2018. Which goes to show that the myth that Spanish language as a barrier to mainstream consumption has also been obliterated —according to a report from the music consumption company BuzzAngle, last year “Latin” music (measured by physical and digital sales as well as on-demand streams) represented 9.4 percent of listening in the U.S., overtaking country music (8.7 percent). 

Reggaeton is a fountain of joy for many, it offers close dancing and unrepentant sexuality as a form of catharsis. And as its prominence rose, spreading to other Latin American countries, the US, and ultimately the whole world, the genre became an unmatchable source of pride for Latinxs. This was the decade Latinxs demanded space and reggaeton became truly visible –and we invited the world the ride, one perreo intenso at a time.

Fans Are Divided Over the Controversial Outfit Lizzo Wore Court-side At the Lakers-Timberwolves Game

Lizzo, the conclusive breakout popstar, fashion icon, and body-positivity role model of 2019, has been serving us sexy lewks and fashion ‘fits since she stepped onto the scene. But her latest ensemble has left both fans and casual observers scratching their heads (and their hoo-has) in confusion.

On Sunday, Lizzo attended the LA Lakers versus Minnesota Timberwolves basketball game dressed in a risque outfit. And unlike many of Lizzo’s previous edgy ensembles that have been pretty much universally embraced, this one caused quite the internet uproar. The outfit consisted of a long black t-shirt with a hole cut-out on her backside, exposing her thong-clad bare behind. And to take things even further, when the Laker Girls performed a dance routine to Lizzo’s hit-single “Juice” during half-time Lizzo got up and started to twerk. Her butt was facing the camera and her dance was picked up and broadcast on  the jumbotron and then the TV. In short, she essentially mooned the entirety of America before the camera quickly panned away.

And although Lizzo is known for stepping out in edgy ensembles, this one had many people saying she went too far.

As usual, there were a few haters who used Lizzo’s outfit as an opportunity to publicly body-shame her, but outside of those people, the outfit’s reception was mixed for more complicated reasons. Critics claimed that Lizzo’s ass-less outfit was too provocative for what many view as a family event. 

On this front, there was a consensus that there is a “time and a place” to show of your behind in public (like at a concert for your fans or an older-skewing awards show). Others took exception for what they believed was an issue of cleanliness: “This is a hygiene matter not a size/weight matter,” said one Twitter user. “It’s not okay to have your bare ass out on public seating”.

The social-media discussion has simply snowballed since Sunday. For every person that says Lizzo’s outfit was inappropriate, there is another person claiming that society only views it as inappropriate due to internalized fatphobia. Supporters of Lizzo point to other celebrities like Nicki Minaj and Rihanna who have built their entire careers profiting off their bodies. Others maintain that even these celebs wouldn’t go to a basketball game with their butt cheeks out.

Regardless of where you fall on the issue, it’s safe to say that this conversation wouldn’t be as heated if the celebrity in question was thin and had a conventionally “Hollywood” look.

On Twitter, some people were mad that Lizzo was “getting away” with dressing provocatively because of her body positivity brand. “If Lizzo wasn’t famous she would have definitely been asked to leave,” said one Twitter user. “It was inappropriate for a family setting. Sorry not sorry.” Really, there’s no way for us to know whether there would be this much outrage if a thinner celebrity wore such a provocative outfit to a professional sports game. If there’s one thing Lizzo is, it’s a trailblazer: we haven’t seen anything like this before.

And that’s exactly how Lizzo likes it. As the Grammy-nominated singer has previously said before, she’s made a conscious decision to include sexuality as part of her image. “[Women] weren’t given enough space in the industry to carve out a lane for big girls that are brown and black and want to sing and dance without getting sh*t-talked and body shamed,” she previously told Essence. “I want to be a sex symbol and music goddess and I’m out here trying to make that happen for myself. I’m here for the fantasy but I want to be a part of that fantasy. I’m just as fine as those girls.” Goodness knows she’s making good on that goal.

As for the reaction on Twitter, they ranged the spectrum from positive to downright condemning.

Lookout Drake! Lizzo just took over the award for “most polarizing court-side outfit in NBA history”. 

This person was insistent that Lizzo’s weight has nothing to do with the negative reception.

But of course, people responded to this Tweet with examples of graphic court-side outfits that didn’t spark as much outrage.

This person was convinced that Lizzo’s ass-less outfit was all part of her master plan to dominate music:

The timing does seem a little on-the-nose.

This person believes that there is a double-standard at play when judging Lizzo’s fashion choices

It’s true that provocatively-dressed pop stars are pretty par-for-the-course these days. But you’d be hard-pressed to find Beyonce in an ass-less outfit at a Lakers game.

This person pointed out how unsanitary Lizzo’s outfit seemed:

If anything, this is the most balanced take. No one wants to sit on a seat that had someone’s bare butt on it before them.
