Latinos have always been known to work hard towards achieving the American dream. And listen – we’ve come a long way! We’re graduating college, starting businesses, landing great careers, and buying our first homes at a higher rate than any other time in American history. So if you see us strutting a little more than usual, don’t worry that’s just that Latino pride showing. *Puts on sunglasses* But real talk: with the grind, hard work, and hustle comes a lot of stress: mentally and physically.

Enter the sport of golf. *Cue harp music* Golf can often be credited as something that is good for the mind and the body – at the same time! And who doesn’t like saving a little time? I know, I do. I wrote this article while eating snacks. If that’s not killing two birds with one stone, I don’t know what is! Golf can help relieve stress, tension, anxiety, and it’s a fun way to get your body moving without having to show your ID to a bouncer. Golf is so much more than a sport – it’s a way of life!

Having hosted several Tournament crashes and these Golfeando 101 videos, I’ve learned a few things about the sport and I’m here to tell you, golf can do more for you than you know!

Here are 5 reasons why I think you should pick up a golf club and hit the course. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

1. Golf can help be a stress reliever and it’s meditative.

Golf is a sport that requires concentration. A lot of times when we’re stressed, our brains are going a mile a minute! It can feel like a television flipping rapid-fire through channels. But when you hit the golf course, you have to focus on the task at hand. Golfing can take your mind off of whatever is causing you anxiety or stress, and it allows you to just focus and be in the moment. Golf is also pretty relaxing, there’s something so therapeutic about swinging a club and hitting a golf ball as precisely as you can.

2. It’s great for networking.

Golfing is an excellent way to get to know your colleagues on a more personal level. Not to mention, a refreshing approach to taking your business outside the office and onto the green. It’s an awesome activity to do with a peer, mentor, boss, or coworker. Chances are your employer or coworkers always participate in a work or charity golf tournament. Don’t miss out on the chismes and fun because you don’t know how to play. Pick up the club and learn how to play.

You can unwind, have fun, and build a relationship while going along the course. Also, it’s a great conversation starter and ice-breaker in interviews or during meetings! Chances are, there’s another golf-lover in your professional circle. It’s the perfect way to connect and get to know one another.

3. Golf gets you out of the house and into nature.

Being in nature is a wonderful thing. Golfing gets you out from behind your computer or work desk and gets you into the sunshine and crisp air. It’s hard to be in a bad mood when you’re outside enjoying the beautiful weather on a golf course! Also, if your work allows you to leave early or is flexible with your schedule, lots of golf courses offer happy hour! Grab your co-workers, and get some fresh air and bonding time in at your local golf course. It’s a great way to let off some steam after a hectic workday.

4. It’s a great social outing or date night idea.

We’ve all been there: another weekend rolls around and we’re texting everyone in our contacts like “Pero like, what are we doing this weekend?” And they’re all texting back like “Who dis? Stop texting me. You’re weird.” And for the couple of friends that actually do respond, that’s where golf comes in! It’s the perfect social outing with friends! Playing a few rounds with your homies is a great way to pass a beautiful, sunny Saturday. It’s also a great date night idea! What better way to get to know someone than over an 18 hole golf course? If you want to be real smooth, you can even mix it up, and every other hole one of you gets to ask the other person a “Get to know you” question. How cute is that? Trust me, your dating life will thank you.

5. Golf is an awesome workout!

Believe it or not, golf is a great way to move your body and get in a good workout. For one, there’s a lot of walking involved in golf. On average a golfer will walk over 6 miles playing a round of 18 holes, losing 100 calories per mile. The holidays are coming up so skip the golf cart and walk the entire course. Trust me, at the end of your game, you’ll feel amazing. It is an actual workout so take my word for it and stretch beforehand so you don’t feel the burn the next day. Golf also incorporates strength training (swinging the club) and balance. Golf is the perfect mix of relaxing fun while also getting in some exercise without all the huffing and puffing.

Golf is such a fun sport that can have an incredibly positive impact on your life. The next time one of your friends asks what you should do for a hangout, suggest hitting up the local golf course! You won’t regret it.
