1. Her real name isn’t Cardi B

This seems pretty obvious, but Cardi B is just a cute name that she picked up from her parents. Her full legal name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar. The fact that her sister’s name is Hennessy led to the nickname Bacardi, then Cardi, then the rest is history. The ‘B’ alternately stands for bully, or beautiful, depending on her mood.

2. She grew up in the South Bronx

And she’s always been proud of her roots. She recently donated $8,000 to the family of a 15-year-old boy who was a recent victim of gang violence in her old hood.

3. She joined the Bloods at the age of 16.

4. She doesn’t hide the fact that she started stripping at 19.

5. Her next formal job was on the VH1 reality show Love and Hip-Hop New York

She appeared on the sixth and seventh seasons of the show, and allowed the cameras to follow her budding music career, as well as all the drama associated with her relationship with Tommy Geez, a rapper who at the time was serving a four-year prison sentence. She left the show in 2016 to pursue her music career full-time.

6. Since her appearance on Love and Hip-Hop New York, Cardi hasn’t stayed off the airwaves for long.

She followed up her two seasons on LHHNY with a stint on the BET show Being Mary Jane, and guest appearances on Hip Hop Squares, and Kocktails with Khloéwhere she talked about what happened when she told her mom that she had become a stripper.

8. She isn’t afraid to talk about her plastic surgery

She credits it with helping her stripping career, and says that she first started thinking about it early on. Her rationale is that people don’t come to the club to see dancers who look like they just walked off the street.

9. Tired of people making fun of her crooked smile, one of the first things that Cardi B did after appearing on LHHNY was pay big bucks to a dentist to fix her teeth.

There’s a major difference between her early Instagram videos and Cardi today- her straight, white smile cost about the same as a luxury SUV.

10. The loud, hilarious personality that made her a social media icon was part of the reason why she had trouble in school.

Her loud, stream-of-consciousness videos on Instagram made her a household name, which in turn helped raise her profile enough that studios paid attention when she started dropping tracks. In school, Cardi says that she was often disruptive- not because she was a bad kid, but because she could never stop telling jokes.

14. She’s been careful about sharing photos of little Kulture.

Even though her Instagram account gives her fans 24/7 access, she doesn’t plan on doing the same with her daughter’s life. While she’s posted a few photos of her daughter bassinet, the only photo she’s made public is of Kulture’s tiny hands, which was posted on Instagram on September 2nd.

15. Cardi B plans to be a strict parent.

Her daughter is only a few months old, but Cardi recently told People that she’s planning on being a very strict parent with daughter Kulture. “Like, you can have whatever you want, but you can’t do whatever you want,” she says.

“If in order to consider someone a feminist, they have to had gone to college, got degrees, own companies, then that’s not real,” she told Latina magazine in 2016. “Why can’t someone who came from the bottom, who has a dark past, not achieve? I used to be a dancer and did what I did. I don’t have a perfect vocabulary. But I do influence people.”

Cardi B Went From Wearing Pasties On The Red Carpet To Fashion’s Top Designers. Here’s A Look Back On Her Style Journey

It’s hard not to look at Cardi B and absolutely revel in her career evolution. In the pace of four years, the Dominican-Trinidadian rapper has transformed herself from a learning-as-she-goes newbie to Queen Cardi B. While for most celebrities such a glow-up has led to changes in the way they choose to present themselves stylistically, this Bronx-born and raised Latina has used her style to affirm that she plans on remaining true to herself.

Here’s a look at Cardi B’s style evolution.

Early on, the hip-hop star followed the footpath of iconic female rappers.

In September 2015, Cardi B attended The Blondes show in New York at Milk Studios for New York Fashion Week’s The Shows.

During an appearance, Cardi emulated the unapologetic aesthetic of queen rappers that came before her, particularly Lil’ Kim. In 1999, Kim was the hottest female rapper of her time. Similar to the purple sequined pasty she sported at the MTV awards show that year, Cardi dropped jaws while wearing pasties at a 2015 NYFW show. Lil’ Kim’s look remains one of today’s most talked-about red carpet outfits and has undoubtedly been paid tribute by Cardi multiple times.

The Bronx-born Latina embraced her curves with simple looks.

In February 2016, Cardi attended Bronner Brothers as a TV personality for the International Beauty Show.

Two years have passed since she sported a revealing dress and baseball cap at the Georgia World Congress Center, still, it’s easy to imagine the rapper wearing a similar outfit today, just with a bit more flare.

Belcalis Almanzar soon started showing her success by flashing labels.

In February 12, 2017, Cardi wore a white fur coat and a Gypsy dressy for Gypsy Show at New York Fashion Week.

Longtime fans of Cardi B know that the rapper has always had a love for labels. We didn’t need Bodak Yellow to learn that. Similar to Lil’ Kim’s looks and other Black female artists in her genre, Cardi B has come to show off her success and her own embrace of her sexuality with luxurious style flexing. The photo of her in a white fur coat came just a few days after she had signed a major record deal with Atlantic Records.

Then, she started upping the glitz and showed no plans of slowing down the showstopping.

In March 2017, Cardi attended the Make Trap Great Again showcase at Stubb’s Bar-B-Que for the 2017 SXSW Conference And Festivals in Austin, Texas.

Just a month after nailing her big record deal with Atlantic Records, Cardi stepped out at SXSW festival wearing a low-cut gold dress. The revealing look is something Cardi B has shown no signs of backing away from, even now as she explores her passion for design and looks from different decades.

Once red carpet season was in full swing, Cardi established that she knows how to clean up.

In September 14, 2017, Cardi B stunned in an off-shoulder Christian Siriano ball gown for Rihanna’s 3rd Annual Diamond Ball at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Fans watching Cardi B’s major Cinderella red carpet moment were quite literally stunned by the rapper’s transformation. The look rolled out a new understanding of her fashion diversity to fans and showed designers that there was more to her style than the BX street looks she’s famous for. The diamond-colored, conservative, floor-length gown played a stark contrast to the styles we’d come to know the artist for in previous years. The appearance was an alert to fashion designers around the world that the Latina’s eccentricity could give even royal’s a run for their money.

But she didn’t leave behind her signature money-moving and street swag.

On October 6, 2017, Cardi performed during the BET Hip Hop Awards 2017 at The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach, Florida.

Just a few weeks after snatching breaths at Rihanna’s big bash, Belcalis stole the show at the BET Awards in an ox, mink, and ostrich intarsia coat by Christopher John Rogers Eddie. The bold number had the best of hip-hop stylists analyzing it as an ode to Lil’ Kim.

She may have started from the bottom but one thing she’s not changing on her way to the top is her trendy hair.

On December 29, 2017, Cardi performed at The Joy Theater in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Wearing a sheer leotard and blue locks, the rapper put on quite a show for fans at a performance in New Orleans. The ‘Velvet Blue Mink Full Lace Unit’ that flowed past Cardi’s shoulders were styled by Atlanta hairstylist Arrogant Tae.

Then Queen Cardi emerged to show us what regular, degular, shmegular looks like when it meets shwanky.

On January 28, 2018, Cardi B attended the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

In another gorgeous look, Cardi B revealed that the rapper life can be just as a graceful and elegant as a hip-hop artist wants to be.

When stepping out, the Latina rapper doesn’t shy away from her pelitos.

On February 3, 2018, Cardi B attended the 2018 MAXIM party produced By Karma International in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Sporting a look that plenty of Latinas know well, Cardi B stepped on to the red carpet of a Maxim party rocking a high ponytail and baby hairs. Once again proving that while her label game might have been elevated, Cardi B’s glow up is more about glam and career power and not at all about losing her roots.

She has continued her path of becoming an icon while showing up The Icons.

On February 10, 2018, Cardi B sat front and center in a row with Whoopi Goldberg, Meg Ryan, Molly Shannon, Brad Walsh, Jaimie Alexander and Sarah Rafferty while attending the Christian Siriano fashion show for New York Fashion Week.

Sitting among a row of some of the entertainment’s industry’s most famous style veterans, Cardi B stood out at the Christian Siriano fashion show while sporting a fur coat and sunnies, looking equal parts fly and opulent.

She has proved herself to be the ultimate award winner and fashion maven.

On March 11, 2018, Cardi B accepts her award for Best New Artist onstage during the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards in Inglewood, California.

Having quickly proven herself to be a fashion favorite for Christian Siriano, the rapper wore a burgundy tulle dress by the designer from his fall 2018 collection just weeks before the drop of her debut album. The playful dress turned out to be a perfect match for her exuberant acceptance speech and perhaps one of her most talked-about looks while rumors of her pregnancy were further stirred online.

During the 2018 Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival Cardi B tore up the festival during her performance. But it was 90s R&B feels that truly caught our attention. Her slick all-white outfit paired with baggy pants and exquisite rizos was a look to vibe to.

For the 2018 Met Gala theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” Cardi B showed up to the event looking bold and bodacious. The Dominican-Trinidadian Latina dove headfirst into the event’s theme with a dress by Jeremy Scott and a jeweled encrusted crown to match.

Cardi is proving to be one of fashion’s top players. We can’t wait to see what other fashion rules she continues to break and what other labels will fight to dress the Latina rapper from The Bronx.

The Bernie Campaign Teamed Up With Cardi B To Talk About Police Brutality, DREAMers And Raising Wages

@BernieSanders / Twitter

Vermont Senator and Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and rapper Cardi B have been teasing their on-screen discussion on issues ranging from police brutality to canceling student debt for a few weeks now. Finally, the Sanders campaign published the video in all its nearly ten minutes of glory.

The two met at Detroit’s TEN nail bar, a deluxe nail salon founded and operated by two women of color. Cardi B came prepared with a list of questions that her own followers have brought up with her. In essence, Cardi B served as a representative of her fans’ political interests and brought them to a Presidential candidate to see if he would be the guy to officially represent their needs in the nation’s most meaningful capacity–as POTUS 2020.

Six weeks ago, Cardi asked her fans what they would want to hear Bernie Sanders discuss.

On July 2, the rapper shared a video to Instagram telling her followers that her number one question to Bernie Sanders is about how to end police brutality in this country. “What would you like to ask? what change would you like to see in your community and in the USA 🇺🇸?” she posted. “2020 is getting very close let’s get familiar with who is running and how they can change the country! Put your questions down below and your questions may be answered very soon.”

Nobody expected she was actually going to sit down with Bernie Sanders and represent the Bardi Gang’s political issues.

Credit: @BernieSanders / Twitter

Hilariously, Sanders wiggled his fingers alongside Cardi B’s as he told us that, “Cardi B’s nails are juuuust a little different than mine. Our views on the issues are pretty similar.”

Cardi B absolutely nailed it as an interviewer. She steered the conversation and truly represented her followers’ interests. She opened the video to remind everyone that, “A couple of weeks ago, I asked my followers what types of questions would you want to ask a Democratic candidate. Let’s go baby.” Here are the takeaways.

Number one: Cardi and Bernie’s shared goal is getting Trump out of office.

Credit: @BernieSanders / Twitter

“You know what I’m trying to do is I’m trying to advocate the youth in my community because I feel like there’s a serious problem right now in America,” Cardi opens. “We have this bully as a President and the only way to take him out is somebody winning.”

“We’ve got to get rid of Donald Trump, obviously. Because Donald Trump is an overt racist. He’s just way out there.”

The first question on Cardi’s mind is putting an end to police brutality in America. Bernie has a three-pronged plan.

Credit: @BernieSanders / Twitter

Cardi B got vulnerable and talked about the mental effects of what it’s like to “constantly see on social media police brutality against black men and against minorities. What are we going to do to change that, because that is discouraging our people? We constantly see our men getting killed every day, and it seems like nobody cares.”

Sanders wants to end the militarization of police departments, which he sees as a form of intimidation.

Credit: @BernieSanders / Twitter

To address police brutality, he wants the Department of Justice to investigate every police killing to ensure accountability and prevent local police departments from covering up crimes. He also wants to federally obligate police departments to “look like the community they serve” and “not like an oppressive army.” Sanders related to the “disgust” of seeing 1 in 4 young black men in the criminal justice system. His solution to that specific issue is to invest in free education instead of investing in prisons and incarceration.

During his first week as President, Sanders will reinstate the executive order that gave protections to DREAMers, and he wants to extend those protections to their parents.

Credit: @BernieSanders / Twitter

Cardi had recalled meeting a fan who enrolled for protections under DACA and is now facing deportation back to Mexico–a place that he has no living memory of ever knowing. Bernie wants the 1.8 million young people who qualify for DACA to experience the freedoms of this country. When he said he wants to expand that program to their parents, Cardi did a little jiggle and let out a “Yeahhh!”

Bernie is going to raise taxes to allow free healthcare and education, but it will be cheaper on a day to day for Americans.

Credit: @BernieSanders / Twitter

“People are afraid to pay more taxes than they’re already paying,” Cardi rightly stated. Bernie’s plan to offer free health care for all will ultimately be cheaper for the overwhelming majority of people than paying for premiums, deductibles, and copayments.

Cardi B will never forget how hard it was to make a living wage before she found fame.

Credit: @BernieSanders / Twitter

Cardi B brought up how “certain people like to brag” about how there are more jobs in America, but she’s questioning the quality of these jobs. Why are her followers having to work two or three jobs to survive? Bernie wants to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

By placing a modest tax on Wall Street, Sanders plans to cancel student debt.

Credit: @BernieSanders / Twitter

Forty-five million Americans are living with student debt. Sanders knows that those of us in our 20s and 30s were told that we had to go to college to get a good job. Where the good jobs at? Our generation is far less likely to own homes and make financial progress in our lives. For the first time, our generation is worse off than the generation before it.

Sanders has a message to Cardi B’s followers: “Trump doesn’t want people of color to be participating in the political process.”

Credit: @BernieSanders / Twitter

“Participate in the political process,” he tells POC. You can spend five minutes to register to vote here.
