When Vogue magazine knocked on Selena Gomez’s door, the pop star (and Instagram legend) not only let them into her house, but she also let them into her life. For nearly eight minutes, Gomez answers question after question — 73 of them — from the man behind the camera. Some questions offer a nice insight into how Gomez looks at the world, while other questions provide a window into Selena Gomez’s personal life. She talks about mistakes, goals, where she’s been and where she’s going. And when asked “What advice would you give your 15-year-old self?” Gomez pauses only briefly before answering with a bit of a self-reflective laugh. “Go out and do it cause you’re going to do it anyway.”
Oh yeah, and the silliest nickname ever given to her, Gomez reveals… well you’ll have to watch. Remember, you’re probably going to do it anyway.
It is graduation season and Covid-19 has changed how we conduct graduation ceremonies. This year, few high school seniors will be able to walk across the stage as states and counties protect their health and offer graduation alternatives. Celebrities have stepped up to give these seniors special commencement speeches.
Selena Gomez wanted to give immigrads a special commencement speech honoring their experience.
“Congratulations to all of the Immigrads,” Gomez says int he video. “I know that this is a virtual ceremony, but it is very real and it is very real to all of the families, and all of you, and your communities. I want you guys to know that you matter and that your experiences are a huge part of the American story.”
Gomez used her speech to connect with the immigrant graduates by relating to their stories.
“When my family came here from Mexico, they set into motion my American story, as well as theirs,” Gomez says. “I’m a proud third-generation American-Mexican, and my family’s journey and their sacrifices helped me get me to where I am today. Mine is not a unique story. Each and every one of you have a similar tale of becoming an American.”
Gomez gave her address for Define American, an immigrant-led organization.
Define American “is a narrative and culture change organization that uses media and the power of storytelling to transcend politics and shift the conversation about immigrants, identity, and citizenship in a changing America,” reads the website.
Gomez fans are here to support the singer and her speech.
Gomez has used her platform to confront major topics in American politics and society. She produced “13 Reasons Why” to enter the conversation about teenage suicide and has used her social media platform to celebrate undocumented immigrants chasing the American Dream.
Gomez ended her speech giving all of the immigrads some words of encouragement.
“So, regardless of where your family is from, regardless of your immigration status, you have taken action to earn an education, to make your families proud, and to open up your worlds,” Gomez says. “So, I’m sending all of my love to you guys today, and congratulations, and I hope that you guys are set off to be everything that you want to be.”
Even while in quarantine, singer, actress, and soon-to-be makeup mogul Selena Gomez is managing to promote her new cosmetics brand, Rare Beauty. Before quarantine, Gomez would have followed the go-to-recipe for media promotion of her beauty products while in public: flaunting them on red carpets and rocking them on the street for paparazzi to capture and post on celebrity blogs.
Today, the producer/ businesswoman is promoting her new brand by proving the comfort it brings to her in her own home. Which makes for some pretty smart marketing if you ask me.
In a recent post to her Instagram page, Gomez shared a series of selfies wearing her natural curls and makeup from Rare Beauty.
“I had an urge to put my make up on,” Gomez wrote in the post’s caption. “My papa noticed then proceeded to ask “why do you look like that?” He whistled as he walked away. So there’s that. Wearing all @rarebeauty.”
In the picture, Gomez appears to be wearing a creamy nude lip product, winged liner, foundation, and concealer (which we know are meant to come in quite a few shades).
Gomez’s beauty launch might be impacted by the current pandemic but the singer is clearly unruffled.
The global pandemic has led many brands to put a pause on production to comply with necessary health measures.
Still, much to our delight, Rare Beauty seems to be trucking along with their plans for a summer on rarebeauty.com and Sephora. This gesture is something that we are particularly grateful for considering the fact that makeup has proven time and again to give us a sense of empowerment and confidence that we can all need in this time filled with so much doubt. From the looks of it, Gomez is using her own Rare Beauty products to help with her own self-care and we really can’t wait to do the same!
