When Spanish Speaking Customers Started Showing Up, This Owner Did The Right Thing

Cliff Collins, owner of Cliff’s Meat Market in Carrboro, North Carolina, understands the value of communication. The butcher shop has been around for more than 30 years, and during that time, it has gained quite a loyal customer base. However, as Cliff’s Meat Market’s customer base expanded, so too did the variety of the customer’s backgrounds.
Around 20 years ago, the butcher shop began to get more and more customers who needed assistance in Spanish. Cliff, not fluent at all, aside from the word “problemo,” decided his customers, no matter their first language, deserved quality customer service. That’s when Cliff Collins employed Tolo Martinez, 37, a man who embodies the spirit of hard work. While the job has given Martinez a chance to provide for his family, he understands the professional limitations he faces every day, and he speaks candidly about the realities he faces as a “successful” immigrant living in the U.S.
