In the 1970s, the television show “CHiPs” was known for being one of the few programs with a Latino lead. Erik Estrada played Frank “Ponch” Poncharello, a member of the California Highway Patrol, who rode through the streets of L.A. with his partner, Jon Baker. Every episode featured the buddy cops riding around motorcycles, saving the day, and impressing women, all while that awesome theme song played in the background. By the time the show had run its course, Ponch was one of the most well-known characters on television. In 1993, Estrada went on to star in the Spanish-language telenovela “Dos Mujeres, Un Camino.”

Flash forward 30 years: the trailer for the “CHiPS” reboot just dropped on Jimmy Kimmel’s YouTube channel.

The trailer shows that Hollywood has stayed remarkably close to the source material for this updated version. Michael Peña plays Ponch, a young federal agent looking to make a name for himself, teamed up with Jon Baker, an aspiring pro motorbiker. Where the 1970s version tried to present the show as a drama with some comedy, this trailer shows a more modern, slapstick bromance. Many of the jokes come from misunderstandings between Michael Peńa and Dax Shepard’s characters, such as Ponch’s fear of Jon’s package, a running joke that gets milked several times during the short trailer. There’s also the requisite level of action, catch phrases, and even cameos that will delight fans of “SNL” and “The Wire.”
