“Saturday Night Live” writer and “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” correspondent Julio Torres was on deck this week to give last-minute Halloween costume ideas. The stand-up comedian, who goes by the title “Space Prince” and is fond of diamonds and crystals, was on hand to give Fallon some helpful advice. Torres is behind some of the most unique SNL sketches of the last couple of years, including “Wells for Boys,” “The Sink,” and the Lin-Manuel Miranda starring sketch “Diego Calls His Mom.”
In the video above, Torres’ costume suggestions get pretty abstract, from “The Lost City of Atlantis” to an “Email Forward from your Dad,” leaving Fallon both confused and gasping for air from laughter. It’s pretty brilliant stuff, and only something that could come from the mind of a crystal loving Space Prince. Watch the video above to ponder whether or not you want to be a “Secret” or a “Rumor” for Halloween.
Check out this trailer from his stand-up special on Comedy Central.
Julio Torres may have just achieved next level respect and stardom because all he had to do to get thee Lin-Manuel Miranda to play the voice of a tiny cactus in his upcoming HBO special was DM him. During an interview on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show, Torres hinted at the presence of some big-name cameos in his HBO comedy special, My Favorite Shapes.
The most obvious cameo that Torres could think of would be the infamous Pulitzer Prize-winning screenwriter, composer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda playing a “self-conscious cactus.” Of course. Torres has had a successful career behind the screen thus far. Born in El Salvador, Torres began writing for Saturday Night Live, where he initially met Lin-Manuel Miranda. His most recent claim to fame was his starring role alongside Fred Armisen in the HBO series Los Espookys.
“We were lucky that some really great actors are voicing the inner spirits of some of those objects because we just needed that,” he told Fallon.
“The role of the cactus went to Lin-Manuel Miranda. I DM’ed him, being like, ‘Can you just be this cactus? This feels like it should be you.’” Wow. That’s all it takes, huh? We love Miranda for just saying ‘yes.’
“’Cause it’s like, can you think of anyone else who would play a little cactus trapped in a little glass container?” Pues, can you?
In the teaser trailer for the comedy special, we get a glimpse of the very cactus that Miranda is set to play. “This next shape that I need to show you,” Torres tells the audience through a microphone at his seat, “This is me coming in late for a meeting and immediately chiming in.”
We can’t wait to hear what the cactus iteration of Lin-Manuel Miranda is going to say.
The Puerto Rican Hamilton creator and star is on vacation in Europe right now, so we haven’t heard his comment on the new break of his latest role. Miranda and Torres have worked together in the past. Torres’ rise to fame began as a writer for Saturday Night Live. Torres wrote the sketch “Diego Calls His Mom” for Miranda’s episode as a host.
“Lin-Manuel is the lil cactus…. awwww,” tweets one fan. Why is the prickliest side of Lin-Manuel Miranda the cutest side we might ever see? Call it an obsession with succulents or just an obsession with literally anything Miranda chooses to do. Take your pick, no me importa.
Right now, fans are just tickled that Lin-Manuel Miranda appears to have no ego whatsoever.
Miranda has won a Pulitzer Prize, three Tony Awards, three Grammys, an Emmy, and two Olivier Awards. He’s also been been nominated for an Academy Award. He’s a GOAT, and yet, he’s also down to be the tiniest of cacti “trapped in a little glass container.”
“He solved the problem,” Torres said of Miranda’s willingness to play the tiny cactus.
Torres asked Fallon if he could really think of anyone else that could play the role of the cactus, to which Fallon replied, “I mean, don’t even make me thing of that. Of course not, no. Lin-Manuel Miranda!” Torres agreed–“He solved the problem.
Torres is the Salvadoran precioso you *would* want to spend time with meeting all his favorite shapes.
HBO describes the Los Espookys comedian’s new special as a worthwhile peek into his “fantastical stories and humorous anecdotes.” We can expect to meet “a plexiglass square, an oval that wishes he were a circle, a self-conscious cactus, and a Ferrero Rocher chocolate.”
We’re curious to see how Lin-Manuel Miranda could ever lead us to believe he could be “self-conscious.” This will be the truest test of his acting abilities. Just kidding, just kidding.
Tune into HBO August 10 at 10:30 p.m. for what’s looking to be an interesting night with Julio Torres.
Expect Julio Torres to be dressed in a glitter suit on stage with a glass conveyer belt shepherding strange objects his way. The teaser trailer gave us a taste of what we were expecting to be Torres dryly musing on his “favorite shapes.” Now, we know that there’s going to be some serious stardom in the shape of a cactus, and many more cameos to look forward to.
With the school season back into full swing, summer is almost officially over. It’s time to focus on the next big event on our calendars: Halloween. We’re talking ghosts and ghouls, candy and costumes and all that is creepy and kooky. It really is one of the most fun times of the year and the unofficial start of the Fall/Winter holiday season. Halloween is a party in its own right but one of the biggest names in entertainment is looking to add to the holiday’s mischievous mayhem.
This year, Disneyland is hosting its new Oogie Boogie Bash — a Halloween party inspired by Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
According to Disneyland’s website, the event will be available for a limited time on select nights in September to October 2019 at Disney California Adventure park.

The event is only at the Cali location and takes the place of the park’s previous Mickey’s Halloween Party. The Oogie Boogie Bash is described as a family-friendly, after-hours costume party that is complete with appearances from select Disney villains. Oogie Boogie himself will be there to act as the “monster of scare-e-monies” for the party.
Guests will be able to trick-or-treat and watch a villainous parade spook its way through the park. There will also be immersive Treat Trails where guests can collect treasures as they enjoy music, themed decor and the appearance of a villain or two. If you are looking to oogie boogie on down, you can join the DescenDance party and dance along to your favorite Disney’s “Descendants” songs. There will also be Halloween themed meet and greets with Mickey, Goofy, and all your favorite Disney pals.
The world of Disney California Adventure Park is also getting a spooky overhaul to meet the party’s scary theme.

The park’s Carthay Circle’s Bell Tower will be getting a batty makeover just for this event. Clouds of bats will coil around the tower and transform the building into a landmark perfectly fit for the new Halloween Town. Disney California Adventure park will also see its Redwood Creek Challenge Trail transformed for the Oogie Boogie Bash. The interactive Cliff Hanger Traverse Rock Climb and complete play yard will be bathed in spooky lights, sound, and effects to give the attraction a totally haunted feel.
There will also be a major nightly event at the park’s Paradise Bay.

The park’s nightly World of Color event will get an exclusive villain-themed upgrade. Entitled “Villainous!” the Oogie Boogie Bash exclusive will feature lights, lasers, and special effects galore along with appearances by the scariest villains the House of Mouse has created. The show is all new and promises to be a magical sight for guests of all ages.
According to the Disney Parks Blog, you’ll also be able to take the Oogie Boogie fun home with you thanks to their exclusive souvenirs.

The park will offer limited Oogie Boogie Bash apparel for both adults and children including tee shirts, long-sleeved shirts, pullovers and hoodies. There’s also a specially designed Mouse Ear headband to fit the eerie theme of the party. Four limited-edition pins and a light up Oogie Boogie shaped sipper cup is also among the merchandise you can collect.
Don’t forget about the party’s food! Is your stomach feeling a bit haunted by hunger? Fill it with these cool treats. Be sure to grab the new Oogie Boogie-inspired sweet funnel cake fries or the party’s refreshing concoction with glowing cubes. It’s so eerie that it seems to have been made in a science laboratory.
Of course, Twitter is as excited about this event as we are.
